B J's Pub — Restaurant in Maryland

This bar is a bitter disappointment and the staff here are actual thieves. We went there Jan 2025 to get a couple drinks (been meaning to write this for some time). We ordered some mozzarella sticks and a quesadilla on top of a margarita and a Coca Cola. The food was basically inedible, we could hardly choke down a single bite. The mozzarella sticks were like actual generic frozen grocery store ones and had clearly been cooked in the microwave, the little plastic cup of marinara sauce that comes in the box being the dead giveaway.

Because it was right after the holidays and we didn’t realize there was any gratuity added (also seeing it was a struggling local business), we tipped $12 on a $28.68 bill total (a total that was handwritten which becomes a relevant detail later). We are fairly sure it was the owner who served us, btw. Her shift ended before we were finished drinking which is why she closed us out on our bill and a new server then clocked in and took over as our server.

Upon receiving the second check, we noticed the “18% gratuity added” at the bottom and realized we had over tipped on the first check. So we tipped $0.38 on a $19.62 bill, bringing the total to 20$ even. Seeing the transactions posted on our bank app weeks later, it occurred to us that the 2nd server had completely disregarded the $0.38 that we wrote on the tip line and gave herself a $4.00 on top of the 18% already added bringing the total amount charged to $23.62(on the second check). I guess she didn’t like that we only gave $0.38 after the 18% gratuity already added! Isn’t that like…theft?

After all of this, we decided to look back at the 1st receipt we had luckily kept, and realized a 27% gratuity was added to the FIRST check(which conveniently did not mention any gratuity was already added like the 2nd check which DID specify 18% was added)!! Is 18% not the standard?? So we were technically stolen from by BOTH servers (which likely included the owner), and that suggests to me that this instance was not a one off, but more like standard policy. So if you DO decide you must visit this shady establishment, KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS AND CHECK YOUR...

I do NOT recommend you go here ESPECIALLY as an interracial couple. Very cold environment with disrespectful and ignorant bartender. He and I have been to plenty hole in wall like/dive bars and have never had such ugly treatment.

I stopped here with my bf to get drinks and as soon as he and I walk in bar, the elderly blond woman bartending yells across the bar if we have ID. We both nod yes and take a seat. There were a few other customers settled in and she just stands in the corner opposite of where we sit down and gives us a disgusted look before turning back to finish her conversation. She periodically glances at us as we wait.

He and I walk out after a few mins of waiting. She NEVER WALKS OVER to check BOTH our IDs...
