Very disappointed. I expected so much more from a Baltimore institution during my first visit. Don't judge what you get by the pics on the menu. It would be like McDonald's putting a picture of filet mignon in place of a McD's hamburger on its menu...they're both beef, right?? I was excited to get the fries as pictured and promised on the menu; real potatoes with skin, crisp and fresh and hot. In reality, large, flat, pre-formed, mushy frozen fries that weren't even fully cooked; the kind when you pick it up it breaks in half because it's so soft and heavy. Remember the horrible fries you used to get in the school cafeteria in the 1970's? Completely inedible. Ketchup couldn't mask how bad they were. The burger was round, very round. Like the die-cut frozen kind you buy in boxes at Costco or Walmart. Not at all like the apparently handpressed (and what appeared to be fresh) burger in the photo. I seriously doubt the grill marks or attempt at flame-broil flavor were real; do they have a fire or charcoal grill in the back? I wouldn't be surprised if it was thawed quickly in a microwave then tossed on the grill. Absolutely no taste. I had no idea I was eating beef. The menu brags, "100% Angus beef." But again, Walmart sells cheap 100% Angus beef by the box. The cole slaw was basically shredded cabbage with watery sauce in the bottom of the bowl. I honestly hoped that it would be a redeeming aspect of this meal, but the sauce was so watery that I had to stir it to get sauce to the naked cabbage on top. It was not at all appetizing. My daughter's grilled cheese sandwich appeared fine, and she said it tasted good. The pickle was crisp and fresh. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The chicken noodle soup was very good, with big pieces of chicken and a hearty flavor. Lots of noodles, which I think were egg noodles. Again, very good. At $4.50, my slice of chocolate fudge cake was half the size I expected. While it was serviceable, it did not have the "oomph" of chocolate or fudge that such an attractive dessert case promised. A little chocolate flavoring in an otherwise bland cake batter or icing does not make it a chocolate fudge (mini) cake slice. The four (FOUR!!!!!) big screen TV's in the small dining room and above the counter blasting a soap opera (I didn't know they were still on TV, what year is this?) during our lunchtime meal made it feel like we were eating in front of the giant TV wall at Best Buy. Being forced to watch General Hospital put the exclamation point on this very disappointing -- and final...
Read moreBeing a Sunday morning, they were expectedly busy with people coming in to eat, people leaving from breakfast in line to pay, and other people picking up carry-out. No matter where you stood, you were in somsones way, so when my food was ready, I quickly paid just to get out of there. When I realized my total was $87, I asked for a receipt. My carry-out order of an Eastern Skillet (14.99), Chicken and Waffles (13.99), a Chipotle chicken sandwich (14.99), and a SIDE of cream chipped beef came up to $87. The individual who took my order thought I wanted an entree of cream chipped beef (10.99) so I explained to the woman at the cash register that it was supposed to be a side order. She asked for my receipt, which I gave her, and she went to the kitchen. She came back and INSISTED that I was wrong. She insisted she knew what I ordered better than I knew what I ordered. I ordered our breakfast, I knew what I asked for, and what they charged me for and gave me, was wrong. I have never had an employee in a restaurant treat me with such disrespect, blatently telling me I was wrong. A gentleman who worked there came over to try to help, because the total seemed high, and I did not want to pay for something I did not order, and did not want to be overcharged for something i did not want. I was explaining that I only ordered a side order and would like only a side order and to be refunded the difference. Now she repeatedly stated that if she gave me the difference her drawer was going to be short, but she reluctantly gave me the $6 which the man stated was supposed to be the difference. By this point my food was getting cold and my family was hungry and I just wanted to get home so we could eat breakfast. Once I got home I realized she never gave me back my receipt so I still don't know how our total was $81. Even with a 15% service charge for the total being over $30, and a 4% charge for carry out, that still doesn't equal $81. Between the incredibly rude cashier and being ridiculously overcharged, this was 100% one of my worst restaurant experiences ever and I will NEVER...
Read moreThe service can be very sketchy here. A few waitresses are excellent, others are off-hand, abrupt & inattentive. It's a gamble. A lunch special was worth going for. I had a monster Buffalo chicken tenders salad. It was loaded with long strips of freshly roasted chicken bathed in a Buffalo coating. The zing was mild, but cumulative. My wife had the Tuna Salad-Stuffed Tomato. We started with the lentil soup. Hearty & tasty. She had a cup. I upgraded to a bowl. It was tasty & filling. On Wednesday, the lunch special was peppered steak. A hearty meal with large segments of seared steak mixed with peppers & mushrooms in a rich sauce, over a large bed of rice. On a Friday, the Steak Stew special or the Rockfish sounded good, but I went for the Chicken & Avocado wrap [see the photo]. It's tasty & really big. Good for a hearty appetite, or take half home. Lots of slices of avocado & chunky pieces of chicken. This is well worth a try. I had a bowl of the day's chicken noodle soup--see the photo. It was tasty & big. A cup of it came free but my upgrade toa a bowl was only $1.50. We also had a burger with no bun--there is a "bunless burger" on the menu that also sounds good. See the photo. The Mondays' dinner special, prime rib steak, is really good & amazing value. For about $19 you get a prime rib with bone covering 2/3rds of your dinner plate. About 1 1/2 inches thick. Plenty of au juice gravy. The baked potato comes on another plate. Also included is your cup of soup. We like the chicken noodle or the navy bean. And, a side salad. We like the Parmesan salad dressing. It's tangy & creamy. They may run out of the prime rib, so plan on a late afternoon or very early evening meal. Split pea soup is always thick & tasty. The croutons are homemade. The daily specials included corned beef & cabbage. Generous slices of flavorful corned beef covered a high platform built from moist segments of cabbage & chunks of boiled potatoes. Highly...
