Tabu Social Club — Restaurant in Maryland

I am a reasonably attractive, fit / athletic single man. I went as a "sponsored" single male on a Saturday in June 2017 (during a "blackout" party), with a couple who are my friends. Bottom line: NOT RECOMMENDED, especially for single men. Reasons in my experience (someone else may disagree):

1. most of the people there were couples, and socialized only with themselves or with friends who they came with. Even between different / new couples, I noticed very little interaction. Therfore, not a very "social" atmosphere.
2. the dance floor was during it's peak only 1/3 full (in my opinion), with couples dancing with themselves. The music was so loud, I could not converse with anyone else including my friends. By 1:30 pm, the dance floor was nearly empty except for 2 or 3 couples off to the sides who were making out.
3. for a Saturday, I didn't think it was that crowded overall, compared to clubs I have been to in Florida, NYC, etc. The crowd was relatively sparse.
4. as a single male, I paid $105 cover charge. That included $95 door fee plus $10 surcharge to come with the couple. I am not complaining about the amount of money (I realize that lifestyle clubs depend on single men, to a degree, to "pay their bills"). My gripe is that I really got very little value for what I paid. Basically (from a single man point of view), it is little more than a club with a dance floor. As a single male, I could not attend the play area in the basement without my sponsor couple (and they did not want to go). So I was mostly stuck to the upstairs bar and dance floor, which were populated with couples who were mostly interested in themselves. I could get nearly the same experience in almost any club in Adams Morgan or Dupont Circle, for a $20 cover charge.

Now there is nothing that I can do if people don't want to meet new folks and at least say hi to them, and I am not complaining about that at all. And I certainly understand the restrictions against single men. Vicky and Rick, the owners, work hard to run a great club for couples that is clean and well staffed, and I give them credit for that. However from a "value" point of view, my recommendation for single men is: SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR SOMETHING ELSE. The system is basically designed to rip off single men. Personally, I meet way many women in 30 minutes at a regular club in DC or Baltimore than I did in 3 hours at Tabu. Bottom line is that for me, it was just not worth the steep cover charge ($105) and I will not be returning as a single man (I learned my lesson :) Maybe I'll return as a couple, when I'm...

I love the experience overall. I’ve been a member for a longggg time & I must say it’s changed. Was much better back in the day. When I first started going everyone mingled with everyone...now it’s cliques that more or less keep to themselves.

Even the owner Vicki is NOT friendly or welcoming. It now seems more like a place that is concerned more about the revenue!

They still have contest, but I had conversations with a few members that won prizes or trips and gave yet to get ANY information regarding vouchers. It’s been almost a year now we won & still NOTHING. We talked to other members that won a contest for a vacation as well a few months ago & have not received anything & they also shared when they reached out to Vicki regarding age was NASTY and did not want to be bothered! We feel if their going to advertise something they should honor that.

People come and I’m sure have an ok experience but they don’t know the old Tabu. We have actually been researching to find other places like this in the area to visit, because coming here now is just not the same!!!! If we’re going to spend the amount of money as we do...could least have a better...

I love Tabu my girl and I always have a good time except for the group room. There are always several couples just standing around talking and not participating. Even last night there were 6 couples just standing around and along with two other couples we just got up and walked out. Last week I believe that it was Vicki that came in the room and finally made people leave.

Multiple single males seem to make their way downstairs into the group room. There is one guy in particular who is very aggressive, and I have reported him, and I know other people have reported him as well. One time he tried to put his fingers in my girl while we were in the room.

I would bet you a year's free membership that if he is there tonight 8/26/23, he will be in the room at some point. Last week an employee escorted him upstairs and I said thank you he is always downstairs.

This employee is the only one when he works downstairs consistently monitors the room. My girl and I told him this last week.
