Small place in Arbutus with positively delicious, messy and delightful homestyle Mexican food. You order at the counter and are called when your food is ready. They have a couple of tables out front.
For $12 you can get a trio: taco, huarache and sope, all filled with a meat of your choice. I have tried their carne asada and barbacoa. The latter is rich and very tender shreds of beef. On the hurrache you get beans, lettuce, onions and cilantro. It is topped with crema on a house made elongated tortilla base, said to be in the shape of slippers. I think the sopa had much the same on a thick, chewy masa cake. The taco is meat, onion & cilantro. All comes with a nice salsa verde that packs a punch of both sour and hot. The salsa roja is very hot with the flavors of several chilies. I have also had a Tlayuda, an elongated masa base, thicker than huarache. It is a thick and denser wrapper to a bean, egg, avocado & meat stuffed mess. And do be warned, this is food that is going to get all over.
For taco Tuesday, they offer a trio of tacos with rice and beans for less than $10. I have to try it.
Perhaps my favorite thing is their horchata, a cinnamon dominated delight served on ice in a quart to go container. It is some of the best horchata I have had in a long time. It is thicker and smoother in texture.
Very nice people serving up simple, delicious food. The kind of lace I...
Read moreI asked for a large order for six people and the food order was accurate. I loved how big the jugos were. The Jamaica was sweeter than I prefer, so if you’re not a fan of sugar like me ask for a taste before ordering. I ordered tacos — one chicken, two chorizo, and one shrimp. They were all delicious except in transport the shrimp got cold and therefore a little gummy. I loved how the plate came wrapped, with green and red sauce, a grilled onion, and grilled jalapeño pepper. The onion was white and sweet, and the pepper spicy. The critique from my Mexican friends was that the taco al pastor didn’t have pineapple in it (that’s why I didn’t order it myself — I don’t like sweet in my food). Traditionally it comes with that pineapple, and they were disappointed. Everything was delicious and I would definitely order here again. One word: a lot of the food is naturally gluten free. I’d love if the owner/chef took initiative in certifying the food gluten free so that people with celiac disease can eat it. It would open doors for new clients that are interested in Mexican if it’s...
Read moreSaw this place on TikTok and people were hyping it up as a “whole in the wall” / “hidden gem”, well let me tell you, it was the most low-mid taqueria experience I’ve had in the DMV. I got the Molcajete meal, and it was just not fresh, most of it tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for a VERY long time. The carne asada was tough and salty, the chorizo sausage link was overcooked and tasted stale, the guacamole was starting to brown and tasted malty, all of it was SUPER greasy, the tortillas they gave were Salvadoran (thick tortillas instead of thin), and the rice was the most atrocious piece of the whole meal. It was so stale that my spouse (Mexican) gagged when they tasted it. The restaurant has an odd set up, but that’s expected from a whole in the wall. The service wasn’t the friendliest, the lady acted as if I was being bothersome by simply stating that I’m here for my food. The place simply does not meet the expectations of a descent taqueria, and should focus on making sure that the...
