Vegan Tree — Restaurant in Matawan

This Loving Hut has sadly just lost my business. On Christmas of last year 2011, I received a $20 GC as a stocking stuffer. I went in a month or so later and was told they wouldn't make change or credit the balance, so since i was dining alone I figured I would save it. Today was my 4th time there and I figured it was time to use it. The girl behind the counter informed me that the GC was now expired and I couldn't use it. (7/22/12) I looked at the GC and it said it was issued 12/17/11 and would expire on 05/12 or 09/12. It was hard to tell because it was written in chicken scratch. I asked politely for them to ask a manager to verify since it's less then a year old. She called the owner and the owner said they would honor the $20 GC at only $10. I told her to keep it out of principle. They already got their money and if this is how they value their customers, I would rather spend my money elsewhere. It's a shame because I've been a vegetarian since '95, and it's always nice to have local veggie/vegan choices. While I am at it their "Golden Charm" dish, while flavorful, was super dry with no sauce at all. Their "Philly Cheese steak," again flavorful, but super sloppy and hard to eat. If the owners read this, please treat your customers with a bit more respect. Word of mouth goes a long way and there is a ton of competition in the area. You've lost my business as well as everyone...

1st it's like they just stare at you and whisper amongst themselves.

I order Mozzarella Sticks and Raviolis...Okay maybe it was me not realizing they were fried...okay I'll go with it....but is that Ketchup!!!??????? WTH!!??? Mozzarella Sticks....is that Ranch!!!????

Okay, I'm open minded, lets try it....No, just no. I half way dealt with the ranch...but that was the most foolish decision of anyone to pair those item as such.

Ma'am can I get some more water? Okay...she walks past me two or three times. Can I have more ranch...she actually goes back behind the counter and continues socializing. At this point I want to slap her. It was very hard to not feel like a minority ethnicity in this place.

So I play it safe with a Portobello Panini, figure they cant screw this up.

I bite into it and its a soy patty, I was so disgusted because I don't like those kind of sandwiches. It takes like the chicken patty sandwiches from public school lunches...which were disgusting. It was gross. and I was ticked off. I asked for a box because I figured I would give it to my dog...I didn't even give it to her.

She asked me if I wanted desert. Hell-to-the-No.

Not only will I never come here again, You people need to fix this or close...

We were the only diners at 6:45pm on a Tuesday and perhaps it flows more as a takeout/delivery spot. The few empty tables they had still had old plates and cups on them so one had to be cleaned for us. We think only one person was working as they were doing it all.

Wings- delicious. Ripped seitan deep fried and crispy exterior with slightly soft insides. Flavored really well with a sweet chili dipping sauce and what appeared to be a buffalo style aioli on the sweet side. I could have eaten the whole plate- just wish there was a savory dipping sauce too.

Kung Pao Fusion- amazing flavor, love anything with zucchini- and slight heat as well. The soy protein in this had great density and was filling.

Curry-sliced crispy cutlet on top of a curry sauce with tofu and potatoes- very hearty and a great comfort dish. I think the cutlet was out of place and would have preferred the soy protein from the Kung Pao dish. Very generous portions and the food needs to be experienced fresh!
