Ok, so I ordered my sister a custom cake for her 40th bday. I live in California and I sent them a photo and had a phone consultation regarding the cake and flavors I wanted in the cake.
I was excited to see how it turned out. I wanted a simple, rustic, feminine looking cake. I did not want a traditional looking cake plastered in old school icing. I also wanted a cake that was light with fruit inside.
My sister never got to have a wedding cake and recently divorced, so I wanted this cake to be very special.
The cake was a huge hit. People at the party asked where I got the cake. My sister, who generally doesn't eat sweets, wanted another piece.
I also ordered some pastries and couldn't believe how good they were. I was like, this place is like an old-school Italian bakery from NYC... I did some research, and I found out they were in Brooklyn since 1976, and in 2000, they moved to Matawan, NJ. How lucky are we!!
Now, every time I come to NJ to visit my family, I will be stuffing my face with their Canolli's and lobster tails!!!
Thank you for making my sister's special day even more special. She and her friends are still talking...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI lived in NJ all my life before moving to North Carolina 8 years ago. There are zero Italian Bakeries in NC - no one here ever heard of a Rum Cake let alone a Sogliatelle . On one of my visits to Jersey I found Abbatte Bakery because it was close to my sister in Holmdel. I ordered a Rum Cake and took home some Sfogliatelle and other pastries. The Rum Cake was old world style - like the kind I had at an Italian wedding in 1956 when I was 13 years old and wished I could get a second piece. I have been to Abbate on every visit since. The Sogliatelle is always fresh, rich and crispy - even the next day. When I came back to NC I took home (6) Sogliatelle and would have taken a Rum Cake too if I could. After a month I wished for more Sogliatelle and Abbate sent them to me frozen and I get the aroma of an Italian Pastry shop when I bake them at home. What a treat! Abbate is a top shelf class act. I will be there next Saturday when I visit my sister - looking forward to Rum Cake and Sogliatelle. Now I don't have to wait 60 years for the second piece. Abbate ĆØ il migliore! Abbate...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went here because several people recommended it to me. I wanted to get a birthday cake for my mom. I asked for a sample or cake tasting before I purchased it. They said I had to buy a slice because they did not do that. Fine I did and tasted it. It was pretty good so I went ahead and ordered. They asked me to send a pic of what I had in mind..which I did. When I went to pick up the cake it didnt look like what I wanted but I figured it was ok. But when it was time for the cake cutting and serving ...my guests were very critical. Apparently the cake I sample tasted did not even come close to what I ordered. Pretty as it may have been the cake was so sweet and buttercream galore inside when i asked for just custard. It was just too much sugar. The guests had to drink water discreetly to wash it down. I was so embarrassed..needless to say not returning to this place.. I never did call to let them know but I guess if they see this review they will not do this to any one else. Going back to my...
