I was so excited to visit this place to pick up fresh sweets as Diwali gifts for my daughter’s teachers. When I noticed they had a family meal deal, I thought it’d be perfect to grab dinner for us too. Since I’m unfamiliar with the cuisine and the menu is quite large, I had a few questions. I even let several people go ahead of me in line so I wouldn’t hold up the dinner rush.

When it was finally my turn, I just needed a little guidance - I asked for something mild with chicken for my toddlers, and something spicier for my husband. Unfortunately, the clerk seemed irritated and short with me. The lady in line behind me actually stepped in to help, which was kind of her, but it left me feeling like such a nuisance that I actually skipped ordering anything for myself, or ordering the drink and appetizers I wanted to get. The clerk even told me I could “come back and order again later” so he could move on with the line, like I was supposed to get back in line or something. I ended up using the self-service kiosk for my own meal and got the teachers’ sweets from the market side.

I walked in feeling excited and eager to learn, but left feeling embarrassed and unwelcome - all while spending a good bit of money. Still, I’m giving 4 stars because I know how tough things are for small businesses right now, and I truly want to see them succeed. I’ve been a loyal customer of Desi Bites since the day they opened in Matthews and I was genuinely thrilled to have such a great Indian restaurant nearby. The food has always been delicious, the variety impressive, and it quickly became one of my favorite spots. I’ve recommended it to many friends and people in our community, and many of us visit regularly — sometimes even every other day.

However, I wanted to bring to management’s attention a concern that’s been quite disappointing lately. There is a gentleman at the food counter a newer staff member, I believe whose behavior has consistently been unprofessional. He often wears earphones, chews gum, and unfortunately shows a dismissive attitude toward customers. I initially assumed it was a one-time issue, but after several visits (around ten times now), the same pattern continues. He never greets customers, rarely responds politely, and gives off an impression that he’s not interested in being there.

It’s honestly disheartening to experience this, especially after being such a long-time supporter of Desi Bites. I sincerely hope the management looks into this matter and provides proper guidance or training to maintain the warm and welcoming atmosphere that Desi Bites has always been known for.
