Solum Coffee Roasters — Restaurant in McAllen

I was very excited to try this place out. I had heard great things about the atmosphere and that the coffee was good. With so many people posting online on TikTok and Instagram about how amazing it was I was very excited to try it out.

First I will say that the customer service is amazing. The baristas were super friendly and answered any questions I had and were very patient with us. The atmosphere is very nice and the entire area was very clean. There were lots of places to sit and the ambiance was very nice.

Our order was super simple, a black cold brew, a brown sugar iced latte and 2 pastries. Unfortunately, the pastries were rock hard. You could hit them on the table and they would go “thwonk” from how hard they were. It was a peach bun and a chai banana muffin. They had originally given us the wrong bun pastry so they let us keep it when we pointed it out but even that extra one was rock hard.

We went on a Sunday morning so I don’t know if it was the tail end of the pastries from the week before or if they forgot to rotate them out for new ones but it was super disappointing to spend $20+ on pastries and coffee and not be able to eat them. My husbands black cold brew was really good and he enjoyed it but unfortunately the espresso in my iced brown sugar latte was so burnt that on the first sip all I could taste was extreme bitterness and nothing else. We ended up throwing away the 3 pastries and my iced latte cause at that point with all 3 different pastries all being rock hard, we didn’t think any replacement in their pastry case would be soft.

I’d love to try Solum again and really hope that we just caught them on a bad day cause it really is a nice shop but for the price point it was extremely disappointing to only be able to enjoy a black cold brew and...

So I really enjoy coming to study at this coffee shop. What i just dislike is that they have 1 restroom. Which it’s fine I can wait in line or wait for it to be free I have no problem with that. But what really made me really mad recently was that I had to go to the restroom and I couldn’t hold it anymore it was 6:30pm… they started cleaning the restroom and the guy told me that start to clean the restroom 30 minutes before they close and “they cannot guarantee that they will finish cleaning it before 7pm”. I think they lack common sense or even caring about their customers when there is 30 minutes left and only have ONE restroom??? make it makes sense. That really upset be cause I really needed to pee from drinking so much coffee which they don’t even realize that they sell beverages which cause you to need to PEE and they close the only one restroom they have! they need to be better and clean it after 7 when they close. That is very unprofessional and I really don’t think I’ll be going back if they don’t care about their customers enough to wait to clean the one restroom they have until...

Atmosphere is great definitely a quiet moody place to sit in solitude while drinking a cup of coffee. Plenty of space for larger or smaller groups. Ordered a hot vanilla bean latte with almond milk. Coffee is a bit bitter and nutty-maybe because of the almond milk I ordered? Not sure, but I've tasted coffee from other places with almond milk and they do not taste bitter or nutty. For me it's like a 7/10. It is open early enough for you to enjoy coffee before work in peace and quiet. Will be back to try new flavors and enjoy in this gem!

Update - came back to try the iced mocha latte with almond milk and it was like 5/10 for me. Really don't like the nutty flavor, again not sure if it's the particular almond milk used here. I just could not finish it. I wanted to like it but I didn't. Customer service was great. I do still recommend if you're looking to try a new place- everyone's taste buds are different, so you may still like it here...
