This review is strictly based on the service.
My daughter and I arrived around 1:00 p.m. for lunch. As we walked in, I noticed our waitress had been double-seated back-to-back. Understanding that she was likely stretched thin, I expected a bit of a wait. She quickly brought us water and menus, which was appreciated.
We waited patiently for about 20 minutes before she returned to ask if we’d like anything else to drink. I ordered a latte, but she left without asking if we were ready to place our food order. I assumed she’d ring in the drink and come right back—but that didn’t happen. She remained busy, which made sense since it looked like just her and one other waitress were covering the floor.
About 10 minutes later, another employee arrived—possibly from a break—and headed to the bar. I assumed he was the bartender and would help out with drinks or assist the waitstaff, especially as a new group had just been seated at the bar. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to be actively helping with the flow of service.
We waited another 20 minutes before my latte finally arrived. By that time, two other tables that came in after us had already placed their orders, and one had even received an appetizer. When our waitress brought the latte, I quickly let her know we were ready to order. At that point, we had been seated for 40 minutes.
She said she would put our order in right away. I checked my watch—it was 1:45 p.m. By then, things had started to slow down, and additional staff had arrived. We were checked on twice—once by the other waitress and once by the gentleman from earlier. The second waitress even asked if we still needed to order, which suggested a breakdown in communication. About five minutes later, the gentleman came over to tell us the kitchen was running behind due to a to-go order. I appreciated the update and figured our food would arrive shortly.
Interestingly, throughout our entire visit, I didn’t observe any to-go orders being boxed up, picked up, or taken out of the restaurant. While the gentleman—who appeared to be the bartender—mentioned a delay caused by a to-go order, it was hard to tell if that was truly the case. It may have been a genuine attempt to explain the situation, but from what I could see, it didn’t quite align with what was actually happening.
By 2:10 p.m., a table that had arrived around 2:00 already had their drinks, appetizers, and meal order taken. We still hadn’t received our food. At 2:15, I saw part of our order sitting in the kitchen window. Finally, at 2:20—an hour and twenty minutes after we were seated—our food arrived. However, no napkins or cutlery were brought with it. At this point, the restaurant was nearly empty, with just four tables occupied. I ended up going to the bar myself to grab napkins.
While the food was hot, it wasn’t what I had ordered. I assumed maybe I had misread the menu and just ate it—I wasn’t about to wait another 30 minutes. After we finished, I placed my card on the table to signal that we were ready to pay. The waitress brought the check promptly.
When I looked over the receipt, I saw that the wrong entrée had been rung up, confirming I hadn’t misread the menu after all. I also noticed that our tab was opened 20 minutes after we initially ordered drinks, which further reflected the slow and disorganized service.
All in all, it took over an hour and twenty minutes to receive our food. The service felt uncoordinated and inattentive. I did not leave a tip.
We had high hopes for this restaurant. The atmosphere was lovely, and I truly appreciated the local artwork displayed on the walls, which is available for purchase. Unfortunately, the service experience was so disappointing that we won’t...
Read moreI am well accustomed to dining out at places that, at most, have a couple of vegan items, or things that can be adapted. But when I get to visit a place that is 100% vegan, suddenly a whole new world opens up. Whereas, my choice set is necessarily small at the other places, I know confronted with a plethora of options. No need to amend my herbivorous habits.
And that’s where it becomes difficult, but in a good kind of way!
That’s exactly how I felt at the Healthy Hippie in Medicine Park Oklahoma, a place that I would consider about the last on earth to find such an establishment. But I had done my due diligence before traveling in that direction, and knew in advance where I was going to eat lunch that day. Never look a gift cafe in the mouth, or something like that.
I headed straight to the bar for seating, if only because I like to sit close to the beer. The young woman standing behind the bar proudly announced it was Taco Tuesday, something she could now say without fear of reprisals since Taco Bell won that legal tussle with Taco John’s. After perusing the menu, I heeded her advice. After all, two tacos for $7 is a heck of a deal.
In addition to a full bar, they also had four beers on tap from Kochendorfer Brewing in nearby Duncan. I chose their IPA, which was a delicious quaff for chasing those tacos.
I was still hungry after my tacos, though, so I ordered a District 49 carrot hot dog. Oh my, that was just as amazing as the tacos! In addition to a huge carrot that protruded far outside its vegan bun, it was loaded in saucer kraut, pickles, and mustard. It was a flavorful explosion of goodness.
Overall, the food and the vibe were both to my extreme liking. If I lived near Medicine Park, I would be a regular, and try everything on the menu. It was that enticing. And even if you are an omnivore, you’ll find the Healthy Hippie to be a delightful alternative to eat on the...
Read moreThis was a super fun place to eat! I love the 70’s vibe of this restaurant. The location of the Cafe is in a complex with other businesses with only one driveway. So PAY ATTENTION that you have the correct drive way. I usually don’t like the aesthetics of a business complex, I feel it takes away from the personality of each business. But, once we got upstairs to the Cafe that immediately left my brain. The Healthy Hippie is on the top floor of the building and as you walk upstairs you feel like your walking to a little getaway. When you walk into the cafe, you truly enter this rare oasis. It reminded me of a city view restaurant but in a suburb location. This place is truly a gem! 💎 They have nice decorated tables and comfy seating. They have books, board & card games so you can bring a group of friends and have a game night while you eat some of the healthiest food around the Haltom City area. All the paintings throughout the cafe are originals by a local artist! The menu is ‘Hip’, fun and concise. And the employees are super helpful when making a choice of what to eat—because it’s hard to decide with all the delicious choices! I recommend Janna, she was delightful to talk to. The ingredients are all locally sourced and all recipes are in house—so anything you eat you can truly only get at The Healthy Hippie Cafe. You can either stay a while and dine in or easily order a take-out meal. Speaking of, they have some pre-prepared foods in a cold case as well as a merch corner next to it! I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because like I said you have to really pay attention when first arriving, and this restaurant only has VEGAN and VEGETARIAN options. I definitely recommend their nachos and vegan cheese sauce. I’m seriously addicted to this cheese sauce—I can’t believe it’s...
