I recently had a meal from Kuhar's Carry Out located on the east side of Broadmoor Road/State Route 306 and just south of Mentor Avenue/US Route 20 in Mentor, Ohio. Kuhar's Carry Out is located in a small strip mall. There is plenty of free off-street parking for this strip mall. Wheelchair accessibility from the parking lot is limited - see below.
The food is very tasty and you are served ample portions of food. The pastry choices looked very good - I did not try any of the pastry items. You place your order at the counter. During my visit, late afternoon after 3 p.m., there is one counter person and one cook on duty. The kitchen is located behind the counter and you can watch your meal being prepared. Lunch portions are served until 2 p.m.
I ordered the dinner portion of the daily special. My dinner consists of two good sized Wiener Schnitzel (pork). There is a choice of two sides. I selected the potato salad and the sauerkraut. You, also, get one slice of bread with a small cup of butter. The Schnitzel and the sides came in generous portions with great taste. Two servings of the small cups of butter would be better since there is no sauce with the Wiener Schnitzel. An entree with sauce would not need an additional small cup of butter if you use the bread to mop up the sauce. I, also, ordered a cup of the soup of the day. The Chicken Dumpling soup tasted very good and had nice pieces of vegetables in the broth.
The staff is friendly and helpful and the space is clean. Unfortunately, you have to stand the entire time and the temperature of the room is very warm. Some customers went outside to stand on the sidewalk in the shade to get away from the heat in the waiting area in early July.
I am rating Kuhar's Carry Out a three primarily for the price of the dinner. The price is comparable to a sit down German restaurant. The portions and taste are comparable to the sit down German Restaurant. You get the decor and service in a sit down restaurant which is not offered at Kuhar's Carry Out. To me, why pay a premium for counter service. The prices should be lower since the overhead costs are lower at Kuhar's. In addition, having to stand in a sweltering waiting area was uncomfortable.
I noted one curb cut/wheelchair ramp at the extreme east end of the sidewalk. If it is busy and the parking lot is full, the wheelchair ramp from the parking area is...
Read moreThe only reason for the 4 versus 5 is that one menu says dinners come with veggie and side salad, the other does not. And for one dish the menu states that it is served with sauerkraut but below also says that all dinners come with vegetable. Confusing! We ordered the Salisbury Steak Saturday special and the House Platter. The steak was thick and melt-in-your-mouth tender. It was a bit salty, but that is to be expected, though tasted incredible. Takes one back to the comfort food mother, or grandmother, or myself, in fact, used to make. The gravy, though lacking mushrooms, was also quite flavorful as were the mashed potatoes. The kraut from the other dish was old world mild versus the very salty and tangy stuff one gets in the snowfloss bag. The wienerschnitzel was tender and tasty as was the Paris Schnitzel, which seemed to be more of an egg batter or tempura type with other spices. Also with the platter was a link of smoked sausage which was also quite good. All for around $40, which is pretty good all in all. I am looking forward to trying more of their food. Oh, the young (cute) guy at the counter seemed a little rude at first glance, but I believe it was just they difficulty of communicating through plexi and facemasks. He ultimately brought the food out to us as we waited outside. Good job kiddo. (It was about 4:30 on July 25, 2020 if someone knows who he was and decides...
Read moreThey were out of perch so we got the cod dinner for more at $16.25 each. Crunchy outside with a pastey inner fish cake. The oil it was cooked in smelled bad! The fish was funky. Canned corn and instant mashed potatoes on the side with brown gravy. Who puts brown gravy with a fish dinner! No butter for the slice of bread or mashed potatoes. No slice of lemon to hide the terrible fish. I've had their perch dinner once before and it was great. We will never return. So...
