This place is located in the Asian District, right by the entrance of the Mekong Supermarket, on the right hand side as you enter. It also has its own entrance, just right at the front.
The place is casual, a little grungy, maybe it’s the dark decor and furniture…. The tables are all set with silverware, napkins, straws, condiments, so that part is convenient. We came on a Thursday around lunch time, so it didn't take long for us to get seated. There were about 4 other tables occupied besides us. They have cold water carafe with lemon and that was nice.
We looked over the menu and ordered shortly after being seated. Our entrees came rather quickly. We ordered: (1) #28 with grilled pork chops and (2) another com tam with beef (can't recall the item number on the menu). Both entrees came with a small bowl of soup with pork (complimentary) and it was cooked to perfection cuz the meat was so tender the broth was just so comforting! This is one of the biggest star items for us!
The broken rice is ok, not the best but also better than some I have had. As for the main/selected proteins: The grilled pork is quite thin but tasty. Has grill the criss-cross grill marks, so it looks nice. The beef was a little sweet but still tasty.
The stars, to me, were all supporting items that came with the rice plates which makes the meal enjoyable: the pork soup I mentioned: EXCELLENT! the pickled cabbage (tartness and sweetness were perfect!) the bi - nice and dry as they should be Tom cha was more eggy but still tasty the Tau Hau Ky was surprising DELICIOUS! One of the best I have had!
The sauce (nuoc mam) is on a sweet side but I think most restaurants make them just as sweet.
Overall, I would come back here again for the complimentary pork soup and the Tau Hau Ky! Those 2 items are worth the...
Read moreThis is definitely one of my go-to places for Vietnamese broken rice (Com Tam)! Usually whenever I go to Mekong to get groceries, I would stop by one of the restaurants in the area and this is definitely one of my top picks!!!
There is a side of pork bone soup served with your order. The soup is savory and delicious and the pork pieces just melt in your mouth!
My favorite thing to get is the grilled beef with the shrimp paste wrapped in the tofu skin (Number 33). Usually all their rice dishes come with the scallion topping, shredded pork, and steamed egg. You can customize what meats or items you want from there by choosing from the menu or making substitutes!
For those new to eating Com Tam, you are served a side of the fish sauce and you can pour it on top of your dish to your liking! All the items on the plate should have different tastes and textures yet still work together in perfect harmony! If you're interested in trying a variety of their meats/items, I would recommend getting Number 21, which comes with 10 different types of meats. The plate is huge and can easily serve 2 people. If you are eating it by yourself, you might just have a lot of leftovers for the next day 😉
Not only is their rice delicious, their Buns (rice noodle salads) are also on point! For when I'm in a mood for more veggies, I prefer getting the bun and everything comes out fresh and delicious. The flavors and textures are all there!
Here are some of the toppings I recommend trying for those who haven't had Com Tam before: Lao Xu'ong (Chinese sausage), Chao Tom (Shrimp paste wrapped in sugar cane, here they take out the sugar cane to serve), Tau Hu Ky (shrimp paste wrapped in tofu skin), and then for the main meats I usually prefer the beef or...
