My husband and I saw a lot of five star reviews for this restaurant so we were eager to check it out, as there's no really good Mexican food here in Mesa. At first glance, the place is a little hole in the wall with a few small tables, not very inviting. Cold, sterile and it felt "dirty". We decided to try it anyway. We wanted to sample a little of everything so we ordered the guacamole and chips, a tamale, a carne asada chimichanga plate and a carne asada burrito. The chips and salsa came out first. Chips were freshly fried and thick and the guacamole was ok, nothing special. There weren't enough chips and it was served on a styrofoam plate and the guac in a styrofoam cup. That was the highlight of the meal. Next our food came out.....chopped up pre-cooked carne asada that was tasteless and grizzly. The burrito and chimi were both very large, but pretty tasteless. My chimi had the carne asada in it, some white, tasteless cheese and a few beans (also tasteless). My plate came with rice and beans. The rice was fluffy and fresh but again, no taste. Beans were barely warm and also tasteless. My husband's burrito also had the same tasteless carne asada and it had potatoes, cheese, pico de gallo in it. He says it was "average". He said it wasn't the tastiest thing he ever ate and the carne asada was tough. The pork tamale wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. It was average. So basically, we found the food to be tasteless, pre-cooked and average. There's nothing special about this place at all we thought. We won't be going back. We'll...
Read moreWe ordered a Carne Asada burrito, Bean and Cheese buritto, and side of chips and guacamole. I will start with the good which was the chips and guacamole. The chips were crisp and tasty. The guacamole was fresh and tasted great. The size of the burritos were adequate The bad. The burritos left a lot to be desired. The beans were plain and flavorless. The Carne Asada had a decent flavor. The tortillas were way to big for the size of burrito so it left it "doughy". I had 3 full rolls of tortilla on my burrito, which made 5 on the ends. You would also think that in a Carne Asada burrito the meat would be the star but it took a back seat to the mound of refried beans.
I think the burritos can be pretty good if everything meshed together better; either more meat or smaller tortilla. They do need to step up their bean game to compete im the Mexican food arena.
I will say I would go back for the guacamole but nothing else. Come on Rudy's East Mesa needs a great...
Read moreThis place is amazing. There aren't very many authentic Mexican food places near us. And I am always on the search to find somewhere to take me back to my childhood trips down to Mexico. I am a lover of Al Pastor and was greatly pleased to see it as a meat selection for their burritos.
They recommended that I try the burrito red, white, and green style which is a wet burrito with creama, red sauce, and green sauce. First of all the sauces are amazing. The green sauce has a nice zing that hits you up front and the red sauce is a slow burn that hits you on the back end. And the creama is there to cool you down afterwards. I love it. He wasn't kidding when he said I would.
My mother was also especially pleased that the fish tacos are amazing. Though you do get ice burg lettuce instead of cabbage but she said the quality of the fish was amazing. And since it was Monday, the fish tacos were 99 cents a taco. Definitely a place we will be...
