American Flatbread located in Middlebury was a great find during our road trip through Vermont. We arrived in the evening and the building didn't look like much until we went inside. There is a hostess table in the front and a large dining area to your right with a stone fireplace where you can see them cooking pizzas. In the left is a bar area and some extra seats. This is a very unique restaurant that serves delicious brick oven pizzas. They state they use local sourced ingredients in their food which was evident by the taste of the pizza. There is a lot of interesting art located outside and inside the restaurant providing an eclectic and welcoming vibe. We sat at the bar and the bar tender was very attentive and welcoming. We ordered three pizzas, two small and one large. The large pizza was split with the New Vermont Sausage and Pepperoni & Pepper varieties. All the pizzas were great, but I liked the New Vermont Sausage the best. The bar offers a great selection of liquor, beer, and cider. The bar tenders were busy making classic cocktails. With the menu there was a letter written from what appeared to be the owner that shared an interesting story that is dedicated to the week's menu. I found it to be interesting and it shows that they put that extra effort into making the dining experience more enjoyable. I highly recommend stopping into the American Flatbread restaurant for delicious food, good times, and an...
Read moreI never thought I'd have to give a review about bald-faced discrimination here in Vermont yet here it is: For months in the past two years this establishment would not allow an entire segment of the general population to enter their restaurant, based on their medical needs and choices. Despite there being zero sound evidence that such a policy of discriminating against those who didn't get the new injections would help keep anyone safe, Flatbread chose to adopt this approach. Now, as the world knows that the injections did not only NOT stop the spread, they were not even tested as to their ability to do so, it is time for Flatbread to apologize to those in the community they discriminated against. This isn't about retribution - I should give a business 1 star for discriminating against people but I am not. I am giving them a nudge - as I did in person recently - to make amends, reconcile and be accountable to an unsound, unfair and marginalizing policy based on false pretenses and zero science. An excuse that "we were just following recommendations" is inadequate. It was a free choice to engage in such discrimination and we the community want an apology so that it does not happen again. We look forward to your response. If we do not receive an adequate one we will apply more public and in-person...
Read moreThis is for the gluten free readers out there, I’m only reviewing the gf pizza.
I went here with a friend for dinner and we both ordered flatbreads. A small pizza ranges from $9-15, a basic one around $12. The gluten free crust is an additional $6 - essentially making it 50% more expensive.
I did my research and they don’t upcharge on the crusts - that’s how much they actually cost to buy from the supplier - but I just don’t think the crust was worth the price. It wasn’t all that different from other gluten free crusts I’ve eaten - and I’ve had a lot of them!
Not only that, they originally made my pizza on a normal crust, and it was only when I was about to start eating that the server noticed that it wasn’t gluten free.
I got the pepperoni and peppers which was poorly cheesed and sauced, with pretty raw peppers and onions. All in all, it just didn’t taste that amazing. Plus, at the end of the day I paid $21 for it + tax and tip (~$27-28).
Like I said, this is only for their GF flatbreads, my friend’s normal pizza looked great.
At the end of the day, if you’re GF, you eat what you can get when you go out. This place is...
