I had been to Alfreds in the past and my last full dinner was over 20 years ago and had their Beef Wellington and it was unbelievably good then. I had been given a $100 gift certificate and wanted to use it so I invited to good friends to dine, one gentleman my age (70) and a young lady works for me. We ordered the Beef Wellington and arrived at 4:30pm for a fine night of dining. Here is what happened. We had to wait a bit for our meal even though i was told the Beef Wellington had been cooking for 24 hours. When dinner arrived, the Beef Wellington was warm not hot as we would expect and the cauliflower (which was our only choice) was cold. I dont mean room temp cold but right out of the refrigerator cold! The potatoes were ok. The Beef Wellington was OK but just OK, it lacked the wonderful flavor from the past. We then had desert and two of us two drinks. Our bill was $231. Way overpriced but here is what happened as we were leaving. My friend needed to use the bathroom and he is disabled and the ONLY bathroom was on the second floor up a winding staircase. He was offered help to make it up the stairs but even that would have been hard for him. He didn't want that so he was told by a lady there by the name of Robin that he could always just walk across the street to the 7 Eleven. Keep in mind, this was after a fine meal at a classy restaurant!! It gets worse, that night both my friend and our young lady were sick. She was sick for a few days and my friend for one day. I was fine... I wondered if I should call the Dept of Health as I felt it could be food poisoning. Out of fairness to Alfreds, I decided to call and spoke to Robin and explained all I have just mentioned. She offered my a "do over meal" or a refund. I told her I would check with the two others. Our young lady said there was no way she would ever go back as she was sick for three days. I called Robin and mentioned that and she took down my mailing address to send a check (I thought) Nothing every came, I tried calling several times and left a message which was not returned. I had also told Robin that I would not go public on this IF she handled it fairly. She has not so hence this review. I am concerned with uncooked vegetables as a source of food poisoning. I am concerned the Beef Wellington was warm not hot as it should be. I WOULD NEVER TAKE AND ELDERLY OR DISABLED PERSON TO ALFREDS.. if they have issues with steps. This establishment is not suited for the disabled in my opinion . I also am concerned that the ownership lied to me as to a remedy. If you go , you go at your own risk and you will pay top shelf prices for a mediocre...
Read moreVisited Alfred's Victorian for anniversary dinner. Had not been there in 10 years. Outstanding experience. Facility is aging, but still very nice. Service was very good. Food, however, was just outstanding. Spedino bread/cheese was delicious. Stracciatella soup was next, and also wonderful. More "cheesy" than egg drop, in a light broth. My bride had the Butternut Chicken, with crusted walnuts and pecans. She said the best chicken plate she has ever had. I had the Porobella Pesto. A portobella is a portobella, but the pesto was a "10". Topped it off with their homemade key lime pie, which is just to die for. Very "limey" filling obviously made with heavy cream, and the graham cracker crust just right -- thick and crumbly. This was a mid-week night, and not very busy - only three tables filled in our room - less than 50% - a real shame, as there is nothing else I know of as good as this in the Harrisburg area, including the Hershey circular dining room (and half the price of Hershey). By all means, make a reservation and go! Excepting the challenge of on-street parking, I have nothing bad to say...
Read moreHad always wanted to try the restaurant...thoroughly disappointing! Menu has 3 entrees each of beef, veal, seafood and chicken. One of the beef entrees must be ordered 48hours prior to your visit..why bother including it then! I really had a difficult time choosing any entrée from the choices given...settled on the pasta(red, white, green). The menu is a hodgepodge of European and Italian dishes. I think the prices really don't match the offerings at all. This is a very pricey restaurant. I would expect the hostess to at least be dressed in evening attire, not slacks and a sweater and loafers. The atmosphere is very dank, the carpeting old and obviously in need of replacing..some placeson the floor even had pieces of outdoor carpeting on it. The dining chairs aren''t suited to a 'victorian' restaurant at all.The tablecloths have obviously been through toomany washes. The whole place reminded me of an old haunted house, in which you can by accident grab a bite to eat. The ownership is really avoiding doing any updating to the place..Not at all worth the price. One could do MUCH better if you have the...
