17th Ward seems like it may have potential but from the moment we walked in, I could not wait to leave. I am a local to the area and go out of my way to try to visit new places in Milwaukee and get very exited when I hear about new bars opening. However, with 17th Ward that is unfortunately where the excitement stopped for me.
Personally, I feel as if a "Lounge" should a place where I can feel like I can relax. This bar provides what I would describe as a sterile, cold, industrial, concrete box that functions better as an eco chamber than it does a bar. The theme was reported to be based around the history of Bay View, but to me it feels like another industrial chic, bare-minimum, want-to-be bar.
And with industrial design, comes standard industrial design issues. The music that was playing was loud enough to recognize that something was playing, but with how badly the space echos, it was entirely inaudible. In addition, I was disappointed when I heard the Spotify AI DJ X start yelling over my conversation about how he was going to start switching up the music vibe. I was almost beside myself as I have never seen a bar use this as their music media of choice.
Drinks on the menu seem safe, slightly un-inspired. They use safe spirits that anyone can recognize on a shelf outside of what I can only guess is their vendor "deal of the day" liquors. I would consider 17th Ward's cocktails as very standard with slight variations. Most of these variations include adding Pisco in some form or fashion. Quite frankly, over-priced considering the mid-shelf ingredients being used.
I hope I can make an adjustment to this review as the year goes on and they get though opening pains, but with some of the high-end places with acceptable pricing within the same block, they will be getting a run for their money. Also, they are the only, of 5 bars on the same block that does NOT...
Read moreTucked away on the northern limits of Bay View, this local gem delivers everything youâd want in a great neighborhood bar. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by a genuinely friendly staff that makes you feel like a regularâeven on your first visit. No pretension here, just great people who know their drinks and love what they do (You're the best , Cary and Madalynn. Thanks for making my night out warm and inviting, like we've been friends all our lives.)
The beer selection is top-notch, with a tap list that keeps things interesting for craft beer lovers and casual drinkers alike. Whether youâre into hoppy IPAs, rich stouts, or crisp lagers, thereâs something for every palate. Not to mention the craft cocktails.
The vibe is effortlessly chillâperfect for catching up with friends, unwinding after work, or just spending a quiet evening sipping something cold. Music is well-chosen, never overpowering, and perfectly ambient, letting conversation flow easily. The Rave...it is not.
The space itself is a standout: clean and modern with an industrial edge. Exposed ductwork, steel accents, warm lighting, wood, and granite; just enough minimalist design to feel both trendy and comfortable. It's clear that attention was paid to both aesthetics and functionality; clean, uncluttered, efficient. And no speaker wiring to be seen. Great job electrical-man. It's all about the little details.
Overall, this bar strikes a rare balance between laid-back and lively. If you're looking for a spot with great beer, even better people, and a setting that feels both cool and welcoming, this is it. Highly, highly recommend 17th Ward.
I'm not a review-writer on the norm, but this place is special and more people should be made aware when a new, local business is established and should be given...
Read more17th Ward is the rare modern bar with actual personality. A true gem, it has a seasonal, intriguing cocktail list with something for everyone, including a true Wisconsin Old Fashioned, espresso martini, and tequila/mezcal cocktails (my favorite). There's also a breezy summer patio which blends nicely into the lounge area when the windows are open. TVs has sports on while we were there (impressively without messing up the vibes). We were seated around a diverse and relaxed crowd that made our experience especially notable. In a stacked Milwaukee scene, it more than stands out.
