The customer wants you to greet them, help them, listen to them, and most importantly invite them back. I was so happy to find this coffee shop, but sadly I never want to be back here again. As I was coming in with other 4 people 2 of us decided to order right away while the others went to the back to sattle down. The employee right off the bet said that we can't come to the coffee Shop with this many people and order only 1 thing. I was shocked at that and I was like no we are ordering somthing. After that he demanded that the rest of the group needs to come to the front and order somthing each. I am a shy person therefor I couldn't say anything to his face, because he was speaking loudly and people were staring at us. I apologized just to get over with it, even though we did not do anything wrong. 3 out of 5 of us got somthing and there is no rule where everyone must get somthing. Him assuming that we are using the coffee shop internet was wrong because we had our own internet. Him assuming that we are only buying one thing was wrong becouse 3 of us got somthing. It just felt like he was compaering us to a different group that was here before. this happend on 1/15/2018 at around 9:00pm. This was a very uncomfortable experience. I hope no one else has to...
Read moreReally dope work/study spot when the neighborhood newbie's aren't visiting. When I was initially introduced to this place I was told about the unspoken rule of the back room being the quiet room. It legit helped me get through many restless and/or exhausted study benders during my final year in college. Obviously, if you're not a regular you wouldn't know that you and your chatty friend should grab a spot up front or outside and at the same time one would think that the vibe and prevalence of people with laptops open, headphones on, and heads down in the back room might serve as warning enough.
Coffee shops used to be the go-to work/study spots (and this one is open until 11), but now that coffee is trendy and hipsters have taken over EVERYTHING that was once sacred, it's hard to expect anything less than a party when you go to a coffee shop. Especially in Uptown.
Anyway, this is still a GREAT work/study spot compared to the alternatives in the area, but it would really help if folks were more observant and self-aware re: the enviroment. I HIGHLY recommend the turkey toast &...
Read moreBefore I moved away from Minneapolis, I used to live in South Uptown, and enjoyed walking to Canteen for my morning coffee and occasional "toast happy hour." Now years later I had a chance to stop by while in town on business. I had wondered if I would still like this place, now that I'm no longer a local.
And you know what - this place is still awesome. One of my top 3 cafes in the twin cities for sure. Great local vibe, no gimmicks. The fresh baked goods are more original and of a higher quality than most coffee joints. And the coffee itself is made with high quality, from some very good beans. No one behind the counter has ever given me attitude, and I've never had a bad drink here.
I like that there are two outdoor and two indoor seating areas. I remember this came in handy on crowded weekends.
I left Minneapolis because I had to. It just didn't work out. But there are a few places I dearly miss, and Canteen 3255 is one of them. I will return again to get my hot morning buzz whenever I am back...
