I love Minnesota and I love the UU demonination, but the Sunday service here represents every bad joke about UUism and everything I can't stand about standard fare White Liberal Minnesota. This manifests itself in the over-applauding, laughing frequently at things that aren't really funny, auditory gasping at stories of injustice (which to me dishonors the story-teller, making things about your reaction not their story). Overall it's the typical self-congratulatory tone I see so often around here (it says: "there" is where there are problems...maybe the south or on the police force but not "here"). I know they're trying, but the road to hell really is paved with good intentions. Perhaps it bothers me so much because this is how I was raised or because I still have a large portion of this internal sin myself. Either way, I don't think it helps me overcome it.
