This is the best fish n chips I’ve had to date. It’s not the dish that I’d usually order off a menu at an establishment, but if they are of this quality I’d change my disposition. I’ve even been to London, and this beats the fish n chips there. Let me explain:
First, the fish is firm. It doesn’t fall apart when you eat it, unlike most flaky fish. You can use your fork to separate it or eat with your hands without it crumbling into a mess of fishy flesh.
Second, the fish is very flavorful. The balance of the breading and the fish itself is perfect. The most common issue with fried fish is that the breading takes over, and that it tastes like you were eating something too oily. This is not the case here. This is well-salted outside, and more importantly—what tastes like inside the breading (in the fish itself) too.
Third, the breading is crunchy. This is not a “light“ breading, and actually has a substantial amount of crunch. This sets up a really nice contrast to the moist and tender fish inside. Many fish and chips do not achieve this level of crunch in their crusts, and often end up soggy.
Fourth, the fries are actually quite good. Many times, fries feel like they are unseasoned or soggy. Fries here are neither of those. They are crisp and salted–just how I like them. Many restaurants consider fries an afterthought, but that does not feel like the case here.
You’ll have to pay more for extras. For instance, I had to pay a little bit extra for tartar sauce. Thankfully, the tartar sauce was quite good. If you were to get an extra from the menu, I would recommend the curry. I was very surprised because it was not a combination I had considered before. An interesting aspect of this curry is that it is quite dense. I can tell there is quite a lot of biomass that was blended into the purée that is the curry sauce. It’s a very good combination with fries. I also tried the gravy, but it was not as noteworthy as the curry. I would recommend the curry over the gravy.
In short, I recommend coming here. For the best fish and chips experience you may have in your lifetime, I believe the prices are fair and the...
Read moreWhat fantastic food! My friends and I purposefully ordered different items so we could share them and try more of the menu that way. The fish and chips? Astounding! Plump and large (but not so gargantuan that you felt overfull when eating). The bangers and chips? Really amazing! Their version of a Cornish Pasty? Completely unexpected but really good.
Fantastic wait staff, too. Despite the restaurant being completely full, our waitress was constantly attentive to us and our needs throughout the meal.
I've been several times, as of this update, and I have to say their weekend breakfast is spectacular: even better than the amazing fish and chips! If you've not had a "Full English" or a "Fry-Up", here's your chance to try them. I recommend "the Full Whack": two eggs, bangers, black and white pudding (sausages), potato bread, grilled tomatoes, bacon, baked beans, and mushrooms! It's very filling but also really comforting. Be sure to ask for a bottle of H&P brown sauce ... it's a very nice addition to the eggs and sausages!
The ambiance (especially the appearance of the punched tin roof) was very nice. The only potential problems were the sound-level and seating. The music was a bit loud and made it hard to relax. Also, the seating is hard, straight-backed, and non-cushioned so people with bad backs will not be comfortable unless you bring a cushion. Visually, though, this small restaurant is a real winner in the...
Read moreI couldn't wait to get out of there. I had looked forward to the fish and chips, but the fish was tasteless and mostly inedible. My tip to the cook, if when raw the fish is hard, it will be so when cooked as well. I couldn't chew through it and had to discard at least half of my already small portion. Fries were a 3 out of 5, but lacking flavor since they undersalt all their food. The table salt is in big flakes so it's impossible to salt to taste. On the brighter side, my husband had a great deep fried banger, and my kids had good hamburgers. The ham tasted good too and I was lucky my kid left a few pieces for me or I would have walked out hungry. The restaurant attracts a very annoying crowd: hispters; grumpy, snobby well-to-do middle aged women; narcissistic college-aged kids. Service is friendly but spotty in attentiveness. We were seated by the back door, at a high-top table (I would have liked if the hostess had asked if we wanted the worst spot in the restaurant; I had preferred waiting) where it smelled like ashtray any time a staff member or customer walked in or out, which was about every 2-5 minutes. People waiting to be seated will congregate there - which is immediately adjacent to the table - commenting on how nice and quiet it is, then proceed to converse as if the entire restaurant is...
