I know you probably read phrases like “great local diner” in the majority of diner reviews from all over google and yelp, but let me set the record straight here. Howard’s is by far as great and as local as you can get. I can’t underscore that enough. I could tell everyone dining in was a local or repeat customer when I first looked around the inside. It’s the kind of place where there are no pretenses, no games, no appearances. What you see is what you get. From the moment you sit down you could swear you were transported back to the 60s. It goes without saying that it’s cash only, but not only that, there are no menus to speak of which was a surprise to an out of towner myself. As such, there are no prices anywhere. You pay at the counter when you’re done, and you pay whatever the kind owner/manager decides on the spot. I’m almost positive all the servers are polite girls from the local high school. They take your orders but it’s up to you to take care of the rest. After figuring out they don’t come back and watching the other diners, just get up to get napkins, silverware, or refill your coffee yourself. That’s just how they do things at Howard’s. It’s not some gimmick they do just to make themselves stand out from your typical soulless chain breakfast joint. Far from it. I’m pretty sure the phrase “great local diner” originated from this place...
Read moreIf your looking at the reviews before you try this place for the first time, please read this. When you first walk in you'll be greeted by one of the wonderful waitresses if not by the owner, Wanda herself.. She may make you do the chicken dance before you find your seat. Go with it everyone else in there did it too. After your seated you will not find a menu because breakfast items have not changed in 100 years.. If your craving it, she will make it!! Pancake and a fried pork chop?!?! Coming right up! Sweet tea is on point every time. I went in one Friday not in a great mood... The cook may have noticed because when my pancake and bacon came out, I totally forgot all my troubles. She made a smiling face out of my food. It was great! We chatted with Wanda and in our conversation she said she's wants to meet as many new people as possible. She wants to hear your story, where your from where your going.. We left happy and full! I literally brought my wife and kid the very next day on Saturday and the place was packed! Wanda had half her family on payroll and all were working so hard to make sure everyone had a great meal and experience. If your lucky enough to come in while little Ms Sarah is there, then your in for a cute conversation. I recommend Howard's 👌 See you...
Read moreThis was one of those places that you stumble upon, but are grateful that you did. We were driving through Monck's Corner, looking for somewhere for lunch that wasn't the same old McDonald's or Burger King. This place looked like the antithesis of fast food, so we stopped.
Boy, were we glad! We had some excellent collards and butter beans while there, as well as the usual southern comfort food. The head waitress (? owner?) was hysterical, as was the woman manning the grill in the back corner. They were more than friendly, spending time entertaining our kids throughout our meal. We were even able to get some great tips from them (such as to visit the wonderful Mepkin Abbey nearby).
The next day we were talking to our waiter and the chef at lovely Hominy Grill in Charleston about our fun experiences in the Carolinas. They were both familiar with the Howard Restaurant and couldn't believe that we'd stumbled on it.
All in all, well worth a stop to experience some of the Low Country...
