So to begin with let's start with some background. I grew up in the UK, and in the UK we eat a LOT of curry. We have multiple curry houses in almost every town, and I grew up loving all Indian cuisine. I also love to cook and was fortunate enough to be trained to cook indian from an indian patriarch and chef. I cook a variety of indian food multiple times a week and I always get excited to see a new restaurant in put area. I say all this becuase I know Indian food.
So to the review.
Firstly the Himalayan food is great. The fried Momo is flavorful and cooked to perfection, and it is clear that (as the name implies) Himilayan in their specialty and focus. We tried several dishes and enjoyed them all.
That being said, the Indian food fell short. The chicken tikka Marsala was flavorful but the amount of tiny pieces of chicken in it made it more like a soup than a curry. The lamb Vindaloo (this version included potatoe as is the original portugese recipe) was also sub par. The curry again had tiny pieces of lamb and way to much potato, and the curry itself was too dry.
The rice was cooked well and was light and fluffy, sadly though the same could not be said of the nan bread, and it was clear the dough was made too thin as it didnt rise to allow the pockets of air to populate as is typical of good man bread.
In short this place is great for Himilayan food, but falls short on its Indian. I also confess we have not tried every dish so I can only comment on the dishes we have had.
Based on that, I gave it 3 out of 5 stars as an average, but if I was to judge on Himilayan alonenit would be...
Read moreHimalayan Cafe is our favorite restaurant in Monroe. We have eaten at many Indian restaurants throughout America, and at two Nepalese restaurants near Cleveland. Himalayan Cafe tops them all! To show you that we thought about it, a South Indian restaurant, Udipi Cafe near Pittsburgh, came in second based on their yummy idli fries.
We were impressed right away. The staff, Nishma and Anisha, were super friendly and helpful. The layout and the decor of the restaurant are comfortable and thoughtful. The eating area and the restrooms are very clean.
The food was absolutely top notch. We had: Naan; Vegetable Steam Momo (DELICIOUS dumplings with a tasty tomato sauce); Vegetable Biryani; and, Paneer Tikka Masala.
If you are visiting in the area, it would be worth your time to visit Himalayan Cafe. If you live in the area, please support Himalayan Cafe: aside from having a great dining experience, you help make Monroe a better place to live by assuring that you we have major-city-quality restaurant choices to complement the many advantages of living in our smaller,...
Read moreWalked in to the place to get greeted by the unhappiest waitress i have ever seen anywhere. Not welcoming at all! Chef eating outside with customers. Not sure how the place has over 4 stars. Absolutely the worst nepalese food experience. Asked for spicy chicken chowmein and it was like we asked for more salt. It was inedible. When we let the waitress know how salty it was, she took the plate without apologizing or even addressing it. Then comes back with "when you are ready, come to the counter" Thought that they would address it and ask for feedback but the response was "your ticket is ... " Paid for it, didnt get any itemized receipt but left the tip anyway since i didnt want to ruin her day. She looked like she was exhausted as well. However, staff needs some more training and owner needs to know if they were not informed about this incident. If its the owner who was outside eating instead of helping the waitress who was serving 3 big tables alone, then ive got nothing else to say other than Good luck with the business! Big "0" for...
