MALS KRAZY KRAB — Restaurant in Monroe

We decided to try Mal's based on reviews. I have to say that it wasnt what we expected and left disappointed. We arrived at 5:15 on Saturday, and there was only one other family in the place. The people were very nice and accommodating. We ordered the fried calamari, 2 pieces of fried catfish filets with fries , hushpuppies and coleslaw, crablegs with shrimp, potatoes, sausage and corn. The calamari was good but took a while to come out. It took another 45 min to get our meal. I believe they had some to go orders, but still it should not have taken that long to be served our meal with only a few folks in the restaurant. The catfish was a nice portion, but it was too greasy and had too much batter. The fries were not good. The 2 small hushpuppies were gummy, and the coleslaw was not edible. As for the other items, it all came out smothered in a butter sauce that was extremely messy. Crablegs were okay, shrimp was good , but the sausage, corn and potatoes were not. This could have been much better if everything were steamed and then given a side of warm butter for dipping. Red potatoes would have held up better. On Friday, my wife and I wanted some seafood to eat, so we decided to see what was still open. We chose Mal’s Krazy Krab in Monroe. It was late, about 8:30, so we chose this place because it was open til 10. We get there at 9, the parking lot is pretty dark because it’s at the back of this large retail center, but we walk in because we see plenty of people sitting in there. We go in and are greeted with “lights out!” We are confused and didn’t know what was going on. First time here, so we didn’t know what to expect. The lady says it again and then walks past us, goes outside to see if the open sign is off. She’s says “sign is off.” I say, didn’t see a sign since it’s so dark out and you’re open til 10. Her response “well, we had a good day and ran out of food, but I’ll see if she has anything.” Lady screams from the back “I have fried food.” We order because we didn’t want fast food. We sit at the table and wait. Food comes out. As we check our food, she starts to turn off the lights to indicate we can’t stay and eat. Portions are big, hush puppies, frozen and those prices are at least 10 - 15% more than any other similar place. First...

First time customer and they really deserve a 4.5 but the food was a solid 5. The service was a bit unprofessional but well intended. We were unimpressed by the hush puppies but that is the only down side we found. A party of 4 we had two different types of fish on the fish and chip platter. Both were moist, fresh and no fishy taste. We also had 2 of the shrimp boils. I was a good portion 15 nice size shrimp, potatoes , 2 pieces of corn on the cob, sausage, and a boiled egg. The dish comes in a garlic butter sauce which is wonderful. The entire plate is lightly sprinkled with Cajun seasoning (I asked for heavy ) and that took the dish to another level.
