If you're seeking a fast and friendly sit down restaurant with decent food. This is right up your alley. Food was hot, Beer was Cold! This location is huge inside with a plethora of seating available, but always empty. Large parking lot that's always vacant which is surprising because the food is pretty good and priced about average with surrounding restaurants. It's not a 5 star restaurant by any means, and I was disappointed with them using canned chicken on my tacos, instead of fresh & grilled. It would also go a long way to have the tacos plated in a presentable manner [tacos cady?] They were just sad flapjacks laying on the plate. The restaurant is very clean and I saw the staff continuously working to keep it that way, although they seemed to focus more on that instead of checking in on me if I wanted another beverage or more salsa seeing how I literally was the only customer there. This restaurant definitely can make simple improvements and increase the rating (fresh chicken [not canned], check in on customers experience, garnish plates and make happier presentation)

The food here was good and the service was friendly and prompt. This place has a lot of seating available and a huge parking lot. Is it the best in Pittsburgh for this kind of food? No, it's certainly not and there is better available but this place was above average and they have a very wide variety of menu options sure to please every person at the table. We didn't order any alcoholic beverages but they had a pretty extensive list of options for people who enjoy those kinds of drinks. In terms of regular drinks they serve Pepsi products as well as orange juice and milk. I would not repeat as there is better not far away from here but honestly if your close to this place and deciding if you should go based on the reviews you will certainly not be disappointed by your experience here. I'm terms of price my family of four was 140 after taxes and tip and that was without any alcohol so if you have 4 people who get full meals with ice cream added on that's roughly what you will spend but that is pretty much the norm these days so it's right in the middle of affordability.

The best Mexican food Pittsburgh has to offer! I travel a lot for work and I always try to find the best local spots. The restaurant is very clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. To the person[s] that thinks Taco Hell is better, you obviously don't know Mexican food. I can't speak for the entire menu as this was my first visit. The dish I had (chile colorodo) was deliciously spicy that awoke my taste buds! I highly recommend this if you like spicy food. I can't wait to eat there again! By the way... My bill was high, but only because I had 5 of my favorite beers (Sol) and 1 tequila (1942) along with my meal!

EDIT AUGUST 28TH, 2025: i have previously reviewed. I genuinely have always loved el campesino. It was my favorite place to eat in monroeville...the last few times I dined in, i ordered fried chimichangas and they were really soggy. No big deal, I thought it was odd because theyre fried- so you normally think crunchy- but i honestly didnt know better at the time. Then I tried the Mexican place in new ken, and learned they're supposed to be 'crunchy'. Cool, still good flavor but I do enjoy the actual crunchy ones more.

Fast forward, we have been ordering take out...just a full order of queso, a side of beef, and chips...obviously chips. Usually the beef comes in a large container...and again we received chips(a VERY small pack in comparison to the queso, but chips none the less).

Tonight, we ordered 2 orders of CHIPS and queso, and 2 beefs on the side.

What Mexica resteraunt do you go to doesnt give you a decent size portion with your orders of queso/salsa/guac dips? This one. Not only did they skimp on the chips for the 1 'bag'(if you want to call it that)- that's all we got. As a normal human would assume you would at least get 1 with each order of queso...well the 'manager' explained you dont get chips with every order. You need to buy/order it separately. We are like...we did. When we called and asked for 2 orders of chips and queso. And she kept explaining more chips was an extra charge...which is hilarious because if I dined in, we would get unlimited chips with salsa that nobody even ordered. It is just complimentary. So you guys lost forever, regular customers- over some chips for your rudeness and just not making any sense. I can promise you, there is not a single other Mexican restaurant that does this. Lol. $30 for cheese with 10 chips...2 seperate orders for different people, with 1 TINY bag of chips. K.

And- the cherry on top, talk about inconsistency. Last 2 times we ordered meat, it came in the same sized containers as the queso. This time, it came in tiny containers...she said 'well I'm the manager, they shouldn't have done that!' But her tone, vibe, everything was so overall crappy and rude.

Again, I have no idea- who in their right mind would be like- oh, duh! If I order 2 large quesos, you only get 1 SMALL bag of chips. DUH!!! makes 0 sense.

I generally love the staff...USUALLY some of the nicest waiters...usually love the place in general, but idk. Times/things change i suppose. Super disappointed.

Original review: Favorite place in all of...

HORRIBLE FOOD AND EVEN WORSE SERVICE! Lets start with the fact that when I walked in I was told that the specials were half off appetizers margaritas. I decided to order a margarita, which I have to say was great. I also got cheese dip, which although runny, did not taste bad. I ordered from the vegetarian menu for my main course, which I guess means I only eat cheese wrapped up different ways and drowned in bland, most likely canned sauce. My friend ordered the chicken taco salad, which was basically boiled chicken over lettuce. However, her tortilla bowl the salad was in was nice and crispy. Lets note that the booth behind us started raining from the ceiling. I watched several servers walk by and do nothing. I finally told my server and he put buckets around without even mopping up the existing puddle. Apon receiving the check I was told, unapologetically, that the server was mistaken and nachos were actually what was half off and I received no discount. I also had a coupon, which after much arguing I noticed that THE COUPON WAS PRINTED OFF AFTER IT SUPPOSEDLY EXPIRED, therefore it was never possible to redeem it. My check was $32 and when split between me and my friend we got our statements to sign back as $20 each...do the math (we were charged extra from the check). I asked to speak with a manager based on everything. it took 35 minutes to finally get a manager, who wanted to argue and refuse to be reasonable. After $40 minutes of ridiculousness. I decided not to sign and refuse to pay. The restaurant ended up charging me $20, without my authorization (more than I even ordered). I plan on...

Terrible Service. The server took ten minutes to ask us for our drink order (he was waiting on only two other tables when we got there...it was totally dead) and we were afraid he'd never come back so we ordered food at the same time. He had a bit of an attitude to begin with (maybe it was a long day?) but then when our food came out and I almost swallowed a CHICKEN BONE I found in my enchilada, it displeased me even more that he didn't seem surprised when I showed it to him. He acted like it was normal and asked (with attitude) what he "was supposed" to do about it.... Idk but would YOU like a 2" chicken bone in YOUR enchilada? I could've choked or had it cut my mouth or throat and he really didn't seem that concerned...obviously the food was fresh but that's just unreasonable to serve to any person in ANY restaurant. I honestly feel that not paying for the meal was the least they could do especially since I had already figured out that they don't pay that much attention to what's in their food so I still can't seem to figure out why the waiter was shocked when I told him I didn't want him to bring me out another meal.. why would I want anything else brought out if the chicken isn't clean? The food wasn't bad but it didn't have much flavor. I've been to a lot of authentic Mexican restaurants and each one is a little different but their food was definitely lacking spices or cilantro or something, and their salsa looked and tasted like tomato sauce with little jalapeno pepper seeds in it...Overall, I...
