If there's an confluence of restaurant styles odder than Lebanese and Southern, I don't know if I've found it. And while the breakfast at Shashy's didn't really give me an opportunity to try the former, there was enough of the latter to make for a pretty great breakfast.
Pancakes and waffles are too boring; I'm a Benedict man, through and through, and my mind sparked at the opportunity to try a fried green tomatoes version of the dish. I didn't realize that the presentation involved substituting the FGTs for the English muffin, which put me off a little bit because the muffin is an important part of the ensemble. All was not lost, however, because one half of the muffin was still included off to the side. The other problem with using the tomatoes as the base was a truth that seems to elude many cooks: putting a liquid on top of a fried food ruins the crust, taking it from crunchy to soggy in the blink of the eye. A liquid, say, like a thin hollandaise sauce. It's too bad, because the one corner of a tomato that wasn't doused was pretty well done. Still, the dish on the whole was enjoyable, thanks to the flawless poached eggs and wonderfully crispy bacon. Paired with some cheese grits and a cup of coffee, it was a great way to start the day.
I was swindled into buying a bag of cinnamon rolls. It's not my fault - they were sitting on top of the bakery case, right next to the register, and they were only like $3 for a dozen baseball-sized glazed bits of goodness. There were plenty of other things from which to choose, too, like the world's largest bon bons.
Between the food, the bakery, and Sashy's location in the Mulberry shopping district, you'd be hard-pressed to find something to complain about...
Read moreOctober 2019 Meet 2 other friends for lunch. 1st time I've eaten lunch here. I found there to be a variety of choices to choose from.... from sandwiches & salads, meat & vegetable plates to vegetable plate. I selected 4 vegetables consisting of fried cut corn, black eyed peas, butter beans & sliced tomatoes with cornbread. For the most I enjoyed my lunch. There seemed to be a bit of a bitter taste to the peas and beans like vinegar was used in cooking them. Not my ideal taste but just like anything else we ALL have our Opinions on what taste good based on the way our mom/grandmother cooked or where we were raised. So I wouldn't order the same thing again but I also don't want to suggest that you don't order it. Shashy's has been around in Montgomery for as far back as I can remember & I've never known of a negative comment from those who I know that eat there. It's located in a older part of town that's turned more to business area than residential these days. The parking is a downside to going at a peak time. You have a few places in their small lot & after that you'll have to park on the streets in front (mulberry which is a very busy road) & on side as this sits on a corner lot. Not a big deal unless the weather is bad or high traffic/school traffic time of day. Our waitress was prompt, friendly & checked on us often. I personally find the prices for lunch to be a bit higher than I expected to pay. More like dinner prices to me. The quality was sufficient & we all 3 got a container to carry leftovers home. Not sure if they rotate the menu at lunch or not. If you have a party of more than 4 I'd suggest calling ahead to see if you can...

Service: They are very short staffed with one older gentleman running the floor. He wasn’t rude, but wasn’t polite. I believe it was because of our age, most of the people in the restaurant were 60+. I could overhear his conversation with them and he was nice and apologetic for the longer service times. With us he always had an angry tone of annoyance of us being there.
Food: I ordered the Pecan waffles and my wife got the eggs Benedict. It took about 40-60 min for the meals to arrive after ordering. Her eggs Benedict was good, the potato wedges were overcooked, over salted and hard. My waffles arrived as plain(I had ordered pecan) they were hard and tore apart like ripping cardboard. Bacon tasted reheated. Overall with exception of the eggs Benedict, the food tasted as if it sat in the food warmer for 30+min after being ready. I didn’t complain because I didn’t want to waste any more of my day on a vacation weekend. NOTE:coffee was good
Atmosphere: Besides the poor service and the unpleasant staff the place is outdated and dirty. There are glass chandeliers everywhere with a cleaning attempt you’d expect from a 2-star hotel. Just full of dust in the inconvenient but very visible places. A plant rack near the front door that looked more of a cheap garage storage rack for traveling plant sales. The menus were printed paper but were given to us stained and sticky.
I was not pleased with my dining experience here… I want nothing in return, but I do want to keep others of making the mistake of thinking this place will live up to any rating higher than 3.5 stars...
