My wife and I used to eat at Sukothai at least twice a week under the prior owners. The quality of the food changed once it came under new management. What also changed was the level of customer service. A week ago, I ordered take out and it was three orders of fried rice (Basil and Thai). It was delicious but extremely greasy so much to where I tilted the box to let the oil run out into a measuring cup. I decided to give them a try again a few nights ago. I arrived at the restaurant at 8:15 p.m. to place a carry-out order and immediately upon entering the building was told they were closed. I informed them I was not dining in but taking out. As I proceed to place the order, I politely brought it to the attention of the attendant about my last order, asking if they could use minimal oil or omit altogether. I was then told it could not be done and if I wanted my rice less greasy I needed to dine in (but you just told me you were closed?) Anyhow, since dining in was not feasible, I decided to give my business to another restaurant who had no problem preparing the rice without saturating it. I have also never had this issue in any other state where I have eaten Thai food (retired military). It would have easily been a five star rating had they not drowned the dish in oil. Another reviewer mentioned the same thing (food being wetter)- so hopefully the owners will address this for...
Read moreWe visited for lunch here and it was completely empty. They were getting a lot of take out orders but there wasn’t anyone in the restaurant. Not surprising as it was a weekday. We ordered a spring roll for each of us. The one was big, but was not worth $2.50 for one. It was still dripping oil, but the taste was good. We ordered Panang curry with Tofu and Chilli Paste fried rice with vegetables. The Panang curry was the best among the both. It was lightly sweet and spicy enough to not need any chili oil on the side. The chili paste fried rice - I’m unsure how much rice there actually is. I wonder if those who order it with chicken, get as much chicken as I got vegetables. When you get a spoon in if the rice, the tastes that hit you first are sweetness and then the spice hits you. We ordered 3 spicy (out of 4), but the start off with sweetness was not I was expecting with chili paste fried rice. The portions are too small for the price. We paid $10 for each of the meal, and the portion was really small. Taste wise food was okay-ish. I guess it depends on what is...
Read moreUPDATED REVIEW: Sukothai is under new management and of course I was concerned given this was by far the best Thai food in Cincinnati. Previously I gave 5 stars and have reduced it to 3.5 (clearly there is no option for that so I put them at 3).
The inside of the restaurant has been updated with fresh paint and decor. They service is quicker.
The food: I had the pad thai spicy level 8. It goes from 1-4. I can tell you that an 8 was definitely not spicy enough. They did provide additional spice for me to add on later. The portions were much smaller than the previous ownership. The taste was good (not great but better than average) but again not as good as the previous Sukhothia. It was much wetter as well.
I will be back again but I am definitely now on the lookout for my new regular thai food fix.
Update 2: I added a new image of their new Pad Thai and as you can see it is much different than the amazing old ownership. The new pad Thai tastes like they added a significant amount of garlic and other random non-typical pad...
