Sugarloaf Island Bakery — Restaurant in Morehead City

Sugarloaf Island Bakery has received my top tier 5 star review. I learned about this local bakery from a PBS special featuring Seraphim Smith, a chef from Kinston, NC. Needless to say, I jumped in my car with a friend on Saturday morning to see what this place was all about. It's a small place in the lobby with display cases and racks with goodies on them. We each ordered the chocolate mousse cups and a blueberry cream cheese Danish and a cinnamon bun. These items were delicious and so fresh. We gobbled these down and then stood over the cases to see what was going home. My friend ordered a small blueberry cheesecake, 2 slices of Bavarian cream cake, a slice of chocolate torte, and 2 chocolate eclairs. These items were only 42.00. I was blown away. In my eyes, a great bargain. Do not hold back, but get to Morehead City and try this place out. By the way, I wanted fresh baked bread but was informed that this usually sells out by 9:30 am. I loved this place before it sold to a new owner. I have given her a chance with an open mind. I ordered a birthday cake it wasn't the colors or Butterflies I asked for. Happy birthday wasn't put on it. However I didn't say a word I thought it's still looks OK. As long as the taste is there. I got it home it tasted Terrible. Crisco icing taste which made mom and I nauseous. The cake itself was dry. I compared with other bakeries and she really charged to much for nothing. However I was gonna return for the delicious apple turnovers but last few times I got them hardly any apple in them at all. Sadly I am done with this bakery. She can't hold a candle to the old owner. We were more than pleased with our experience working with Sugarloaf Island Bakery for our wedding cake! Rachel was amazing to work with and helped us create a cake that held special significance to our relationship—and wow, did they deliver!

The cake’s style matched exactly what we requested and was absolutely delicious. Both sets of our parents and other guests raved about it! We opted for a cutting cake and kitchen cakes to be served, and the entire process was seamless from start to finish.
