Well, I’ll tell you what—I was just planning to swing by Harris Teeter to pick up a rotisserie chicken and maybe treat myself to a little something from the Starbucks inside—you know, one of those fancy caramel drinks they do with the drizzle? But wouldn’t you know it, I parked a few spaces down from this place called Ben Gong. It had no real sign, but I saw a bunch of people walking out with the CUTEST little bear ear cups, and I thought, "Well that looks cheerful." And it smelled like brown sugar from the sidewalk. So I figured, "Why not? Life’s short. Let’s get a little crazy and try something new!"
Now, I had no clue what I was walking into. The menu looked like someone had thrown a tea party with a chemistry set. There were words like “jelly,” “popping pearls,” and “milk cap,” which sounded vaguely like a hat, or maybe something from a dairy farm. But the girl at the counter was real sweet, and when I told her I liked dessert and coffee, she suggested the Tiramisu Milk Cap Tea.
Folks. I cannot even explain this drink.
It comes in a clear cup with this velvety cream stuff sitting right on top, like frosting on a fancy Starbucks coffee. She told me not to stir it—just sip through the straw and enjoy the different layers. Okay then. So I took a sip, and I swear to you, with all my heart, my eyes almost rolled back in amazement. It was like someone melted a tiramisu into a glass of cold tea and added... chewy marbles? I nearly spit one out at first, but then I thought, "Oh wait, this is part of the fun."
They’re called “boba pearls,” apparently, and once you get over the surprise of something chewy in your drink, it’s honestly delightful. It’s like dessert and a game. I sat there at the window bar, watching cars pull in and out of the HT parking lot, feeling like I was on vacation in a place I didn’t even know existed.
Would I go again? Oh absolutely. I might even bring my friend Nancy next time—though she’ll probably complain it’s too sweet (she’s the kind who drinks unsweetened tea like it’s penance, bless her soul). But I’ll just tell her to live a little. As a real Southerner, I like my teas SWEET.
Five stars from me. And honestly, I still got the rotisserie chicken, and some other "pantry staples" that were low—ranch dressing, taco shells, coffee creamers. The usual. So overall it was a pretty great day. Thanks, Ben, for making your tea and serving it to...
Read moreRude service, 2 stars are only for the product. The server at the counter spent lots of time chatting with the client in front of me. I have to use the self-serve order system, where I noticed that I could not change my sugar level for the mango pomelo sago. So I decide to wait in line for some help. I waited there for more than 5 minutes while the servers were taking orders and chatting with the client in front of me. The client actually suggested me to use the self service system, but none of the three servers said anything about it. I am not sure why it requires three servers to recommend drinks to a client. After ordering by myself, I had to talk to the server and asked for less sugar level for my drink. The lady seemed interrupted and told me that they cannot modify that for this drink. I have encountered this kind of situation before and I am fine with less flavor in this drink. So I asked if they could just add less syrup or anything they use for it. The server replied “the brand owner does not allow us to make changes on it”. It sounds like a really strict policy. After I got my drink, another server did provide me more explanation about it. Overall, the drinks are fine. If you would like to try it, I would recommend you not to put on a high expectation for the service...
Read moreWe are so surprised with the price here. We pay $6.50 and $7.75 for small size drinks. That’s ridiculous. These drinks don’t even have options for you to pick the size, they said only came with one size and the size is small with that price. The other drink let you pick larger size even cheaper than this one that’s so weird(see pic for size comparison) . We never went to any place that ordered drink one size only but come out just small size for that. I think you guys should check back your menu and adjust the right size for an item cause the price for that not even cheap. The drink i ordered only difference with the brown sugar boba milk tea is the burnt top. And small size of brown sugar boba milk tea is $5.50 so that meant they charged $1 more for just put sugar on top and burnt it(mine they called burnt brown sugar milk tea ^_^) And on top of that we order extra boba but they come out the same like normal one. The girl make our drink left one drink behind and do other drinks after us, we have to asked couple times for it until they realized they forgot to continue on our drink. We have to wait almost 30’ for all of...
