Unfortunately, my first ever Google review of a restaurant has been inspired by a dismal experience. What began as a simple hunt for a breakfast burrito turned into being completely ripped off. Firstly, it should be noted that Mexico Cafe doesn't list prices on their online menu. My friend called in the order over the phone for two breakfast burritos that normally come with chorizo, but being we are vegetarians we requested to sub the meat for avocado. The manager on the phone refused to comply with this very simple and reasonable request. One would think that not getting the main ingredient (i.e. meat) would warrant a simple substitution at no charge, but the manager insisted on charging us an additional 4 bucks for avocado slices. Wow what a slap in the face. Especially since Cocina Sabores which is right down the road from Mexico Cafe ALWAYS subs out the meat for avocado with NO additional price. Here's the topper, Cocina Sabores burritos are only $8 (and are MASSIVE), Mexico Cafe's ended being $18 each!! They of course didn't give us that total over the phone and instead laid that horrendous price on us when we picked up our food. Very shady business practices going on at Mexico Cafe. To make matters worse, the burritos were awful! Totally bland flavor, no veggies whatsoever, only eggs, cheese, beans and a side of $4 avocado slices, that considering the high price and lack of everything else should have been a FREE SUBSTITUTION! I would highly suggest skipping over the lack luster food and insane prices at Mexico Cafe. Instead give your business to the humble and awesome mom/pop Cocina Sabores that's just a half mile away down Division St. Trust me, your wallet and stomach will thank you mightily :) Mexico Cafe. DO BETTER.

Another good find for us displaced Texans searching for good Tex-Mex food. This is not Tex-Mex, but it’s a really good facsimile there of. It is hard not to have the cheese enchiladas with their bread sauce. I’m going to try to convince them to make a chili con carne sometime, but not until I get to know them better. Other items on the menu are very good as well. The service is great , some of them are from the family that runs the restaurant. I would not try to put the food into some region of Mexico. I’m sure it is from family recipes and formulated for the current market where it is located. There is nothing spicy about any of this food hint hint ask for jalapeños or bring your own habanero powder. Chips and salsa are pretty good. Mr. Martinez, the real brains behind Mariano‘s restaurants, always taught me to try enchiladas beans and rice. If this is no good, leave the restaurant. I stand by that and standby this restaurant being really good. I hope my neighbors on Whidbey Island see this posting as many of them are from Texas and I’m sure I have a hankering for good Mexican food. Give it a try.

We were really encouraged by the great reviews and decided to order via DoorDash for a date night in. We ordered flautas, nachos and a chile relleno. What we received was bland, oily and lacking any kind of presentation. Don’t get me wrong - I love a hot plate of cheesy goodness, but for the price, I would have loved to see some kind of vegetable or garnish. My husband commented that the flautas reminded him of the Delimex taquitos we make in our air fryer. We won’t be ordering this again - my hope is that they do a better job in person! Edit: It’s been a year since my initial review and I wanted to add a star and an update - we have since ordered food a few more times for delivery and have had a wonderful experience.

Used to be bigger portions, prices were fairer and they posted their pricing accordingly. Ordered a Deluxe Burrito which used to be ginormous! Now, is about an inch bigger than a regular burrito. Toppings inside were scarce, etc. My girl ordered the Chimichanga with carne asada and they brought out the wrong one lol. At bill time, they double billed cause mine had 2 meats. One is included for the price, and one would've been extra (it used to be free for 2 meats mixed and usually did that to not waste alot of meat supply for the day in one burrito. Had I known, I would've just gotten all carne asada and it taste better. Instead it was small portions of each inside). It was next to impossible for them to admit their shortcomings and change the price. Said I wanted to speak to their manager and you could hear the server bad talking me and pricing behind my back. When I confronted the manager, I told her this is very off-putting as a customer given I used to be a regular and went there often a lil over a year ago. I told her I might not come back and then all the sudden she fixed the bill and offered a discount. Which is why I give 3 stars. Meal wise tho I'd definitely give it a 2 star and nothing special. I used to brag about this place being more closely authentic flavors than the nonsense up in Washington that tastes very watered down. Dare I say, this last time too, things did taste slightly watered down perhaps? Idk. All I can say is that I was not happy, especially given I live in the next county and went out of my way to come back and show a new friend that I'd bragged over the quality and portions of this place. Strongly questioning if I'll return...

Went to pick up a happy hour appetizer order the chicken wings and combination appetizer platter. Upon arrival I asked if everything was in the bag, including the guacamole and sour cream. The host (not sure what his name was, young chubby man curly black hair, glasses 🤓 ) assured me it was. This is the same person that messed up my boyfriend's posole order a few months ago (there was no vegetables that are supposed to come on the side) so I proceeded to check this order and there was no guacamole or sour cream so he went to the kitchen to get it. I get home and realize there was none of the pork Verde that's supposed to come with the combination appetizer platter as well! I had forgotten about the pork Verde supposed to be included but my boyfriend was sure to remind me when I came home. So I drive all the way back for an order of the Verde I asked for a compensation for my time they did compensate with a double order and apologized but really?!! And one of the lids on the container wasn't closed all the way was leaking when I realized I needed to close it well alot leaked into the bag, INEPT AF CHECK YOUR TAKE OUT ORDERS FOLKS 😉 Oh yeah and there were no celery and carrot sticks supposed to come with the chicken...
