Wanted pizza and whereas Dave’s (located in Homewood) is our local preference, we decided to try Davenport’s again…. even though my husband and I both have had sub-par experiences here separately we have never been together. And the reviews were great! So we went in for a date. Wait staff is horrible. The hostess as well as our server on Wednesday, August 23rd were rude and publicly embarrassed my husband and I who were celebrating the news of welcoming a baby girl as of today. What should have been a special and wonderful event where my husband enjoyed two poured glasses of beer from his pitcher. I said to myself well mountain brook is an open container district, so we can just pour the remaining glass and a half in my Stanley cup for him to enjoy once we get home. We did pay for it anyways. And tipped generously as we always do. Boy was I wrong! The hostess stormed to my table immediately and with a loud violent tone told told me that I could not do that. Causing a scene. I told her he will drink as much as he can but I am cramping and pregnant and ready to leave. My husband and I sat there for about five minutes with maybe a sip or two left in his cup and I could see the embarrassment on my husbands face after tipping so well and getting dogged out by our wait staff and the seeming management. He was afraid to leave with or without the drink! The pressure put on him. On our big day! So I said not to worry about it it’s practically empty we can pour it out at the door if that was an issue. Afraid of another publicly humiliating encounter, we slowly and politely exited the dining area. Once approaching the lobby, every worker in the building was crowded around us like they were ready to fight and super aggressive and rude insisting they take my cup from me. Which included my drivers liscense wallet phone credit card etc in a pouch on the side. The short black haired woman (maybe Latina) snatched my cup out of my hand like I was a an underage teenager (I am 27, my husband is 30) and brought it to the restroom with her to pour out. It was so unpleasant I can’t even stress it enough. We were completely compliant and the service was incredibly brash and harsh for it to be a kind family oriented place supposedly. There are better. And our family won’t be back. Abhi is right across the street and the owner Ashish will gladly accommodate you and perhaps sit and have a chat with you make sure everything is being taken care. But as for this place…people only go because it’s all that’s there. Definitely not for the customer service. Which is totally rude. The younger generation gets it. Raised with manners and class. The older workers need fired. That is simply not how you attend to locals. Or anyone. They should apply at their local honky tonks wherever they live at. As that is how we were spoken to. Ruins a good peaceful dining experience. It should have been politely whispered if there was any problem that they had with us. Dave’s pizza in homewood is a few miles away with the best servers and even better pizza. Try it out next time. Give them a call even, they answer on the first ring. Goes to show the difference in service when the owners are around checking on the others left in charge. This place definitely needs to be featured in a “bar rescue” episode. We left feeling so violated. We had high hopes and standards for this local spot. Even gave it another shot a year later. What a shame. Workers improperly trained in customer service even when they appear to have been doing it for their...
Read moreSo I made the mistake of returning to this establishment after my last trip was unsatisfactory. On my previous trip, my girlfriend and I came around 2 in the afternoon and were the only two people there besides the staff. Our question as to why it was so empty would soon be answered. It began with the waitress/hostess bringing us waters and taking our order. She was in no hurry to help, and when we asked for beer menus (while ordering food), she sent another woman over to quickly name, of the top of her head, all the beers they carry. This woman simply listed them as quick as she could and walked away, not even asking what we'd like to drink. So after waiting 20+ minutes, the the original waitress arrives with the pizza and asks us what we'd like to drink. By this point we were just ready to leave (without drinks), but thankfully we had nowhere to be as we had to wait another 5 minutes at the checkout counter (1 more couple came while we were eating) before the hostess/waitress put down her lunch and noticed us. The food was mediocre but not near as bad as the service. Skip ahead to last night. This is the reason I will never give this place business again. I call in a to-go order for a medium cheese pizza at 8:45 while leaving my house (under 10 min away). The girl on the phone, talking in a bratty teenage voice, cannot hear my name (Hudson) even after I spell it out. She says, "I'm just gonna call you Glen. Your pizza will be ready at 9:05pm." My name isn't Glen, and I found this very disrespectful (to the point where I considered not even showing up-as bad as that may be). So I walk in a 9:03, pay at 9:05 (after somebody tried to rudely cut me off in their nonexistent checkout line), and am told my pizza will be out in a second. After sitting on the bench for 5+ minutes, a pizza boy realizes I've been waiting and asks for my name, to which I have to yell "Glen!" When he realizes they haven't even started my pizza, he goes off into the back, only to return to tell me they burnt my first pizza, are making another one, and that the manager will come talk to me. Another minute or two and here comes the manager, repeating the same bogus story, trying to cover up for them forgetting to cook my pizza. He says don't leave (while I'm still waiting for the pizza), walks to the cashier desk, and brings me back a card for a free pizza. He was not sincere at all, didn't ask what he could do to make it right, said sorry once, and acted like he saved the day by giving me a card for another free half-ass pizza. So 9:20 rolls around and I'm finally leaving this overcrowded hell hole. I get home (about 10 min later) to find this "second" pizza is not even warm and not even cut. I had to use my pizza cutter because these fools apparently don't know how to. But hey, I guess a cold pizza is better than a burnt one? I don't know. But one thing I do know is that, even with this free pizza card, I will never give this place another ounce of my business or another second of my time. $15.xx with tax plus a tip (which I regret leaving), totaling $18.00 for a 12" UNCUT cheese pizza that took 35 minutes to prepare. Why go here when you can go to Whole Foods and get a better pizza for less money? I cannot believe a business could make a pizza experience so horrible and do so little to correct it. I'd rather drive the extra distance to Da Vinci's as they make you feel like a customer,...
Read moreThe pizza is so good, and most of the employees are very nice. However, unfortunately tonight the woman taking payments at the register was quite rude. They were busy, and I get that everyone has a bad night every now and again. I walked in and got in line behind three girls. She took their payment seemingly without giving them any sass or indicating they weren’t in the correct line. I walked up after them, and she didn’t even acknowledge me, just waved me off and called someone else up. I just stepped back, and the guy she called up was so nice and apologized to me for her. The next guy she called pointed to me and said told the woman that I was next, and that she needs to take my payment before his. When I got up there I thanked him and said that I was sent away the last time I attempted to pay. She responded with nothing except, “the line is over THERE!” It would’ve been nice when she sent me away if she could’ve said that, maybe a little more politely. I apologized and explained that I walked in after three girls and stood in line behind them, not realizing there was another line, and that I would’ve happily relocated if I had known. She was just incredibly rude. I don’t know if I looked offensive to her in some way or what her deal was, but it was disappointing to be treated this way at one of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham. Will maybe think twice before coming here on a Friday...
