The manager is the owner Bill Smith's grandson and he's surely bringing the place down. He charged me for another table's food and then caught an attitude with me about it because I brought the monetary discrepancy to his attention. He then proceeded to tell me to get out of the restaurant as well as saying that perhaps I shouldn't be going out to eat if him over charging me causes my account to go into the negative. He then took it upon himself to go outside in the parking lot yelling like a maniac harassing my cousin and I while we were in my car trying to leave. I not once declined to pay my bill. I paid my bill with no issue but he was upset that he was called out for overcharging me. Now I see why he works for his grandfather because with behavior like that he would not be able to maintain employment with any respectable professional employer especially in the restaurant industry. I DO NOT RECOMMEND EATING HERE UNTIL HE IS HUMBLED OR NO LONGER THE MANAGER, IT'S ROACH FREE, AND THE FOOD IS HAIR FREE. You would have thought that customers seeing roaches at this place and finding hair on their food would have humbled him (the manager) but nope he's still displaying erratic arrogant disturbing behavior. If you do decide to eat here look out for being billed for food someone else ate (which if you read multiple reviews seems to be an intentional reoccurrence) in addition to your bill, roaches, and hair on your food. Sad situation for his grandfather who entrusted his grandson with the restaurant only for it to be run in a...
Read moreYou won't leave there hungry. There food is good all the way around.the most difficult thing you'll do there is figure out what to eat. The menu is huge and so are there portions. I've eaten there about a dozen times and was never disappointed. My favorites are the chicken parm dinner I can never finish it. Ham and eggs for breakfast. The ham is always tender and not dry. And there scallops are always good to ,that is when your hungry for seafood. Next would be the turkey dinner with gravy, let the girls know how much gravy you want, they'll load it on if you don't let them know. I love gravy no need for me to say anything. For a menu fit for a king or queen I've never been disappointed with there taste and quality of food. I almost forgot about the waitress 's there also great. Once in a while you may end up with a grumpy tired one. But I think we all fall into that category once in a while. Enjoy your food at 5th St. Diner. Then you could walk it off at walmart . You know what we say, don't go grocery shopping on an empty belly. Jim. I don't like to do this however the portions at this place has gone down hill the prices went way up and the portions came way down. With ham and eggs the ham covered its own plate. Now it doesn't even cover the center of the plate. I'm not sure if they have a new cook or what happened with there portions. If anything changes I'll keep you all posted. Food is still good but must take a star away because of the portions. Sorry about this...
Read moreIt's a diner, which is popular around this area, if you're an out-of-towner, don't expect linen napkins and staff to call you sir and madam. It's a very laid back atmosphere, so if that's what you're looking for with pretty good food (for a diner.) Food is not waist-friendly, but that's the norm for diner food. The food most of the time is pretty good, I've had a variety through the years. Most of the waitresses are friendly and, again, laid back, like joking with you and leaning against the wall to take your order. I'm not saying that in a bad way...it's the atmosphere. If you want someone in a suit calling you sir, don't come here...lol
You have your occasional grumpy waitress or host/hostess, but generally, everyone's pretty cool and friendly. Restaurant and bathrooms are clean. Plenty of parking. Food's good no matter what time you go. Definitely get a rowdy crowd later in the night/early am like when the bars close.
I recommend their burgers (they used to be on kaiser rolls which I thought was better, but still good), creamed chipped beef (or SOS)....don't know what chipped beef or SOS is? LOL Sh** on a Shingle...welcome to Berks county! It's small pieces of smoked or dried beef in a white thick gravy type sauce over toast or home fries. (Think similar to biscuits and gravy in the south.) This is the best place for it! I get it...
