I am new to Napa and am in search of a favorite place. This quaint diner in a somewhat dilapidated strip mall could turn out to be what I am looking for.
There is plenty of parking and the menu showed the prices to be reasonable, especially considering the portion sizes I saw on every plate.
My own ham and cheese omelet was perfectly done and larger than I should have eaten. The hash browns and toast were also just right (though if you prefer some crunch to your potatoes, ask them to cook them a little more). The service was prompt and friendly. They even kept an eye on my water and kept it filled - no easy task, as I drink a lot of it!
So why only four stars? Two reasons.
First, while I am not usually moved by the decor (or lack thereof) in a diner, this place is covered in signs telling customers what NOT to do. Every table even includes a brightly-colored sign informing patrons that if there is any evidence of "playing" with the things on the tables (jams, creamers, and other condiments) that the server will clear your table. As a fidgeter who often builds towers out of the tiny jelly boxes and half-and-half cups, or who moves things around so that I can dine at my ease, I found this off-putting. (I put things back when I am done, I promise!)
Second, I chose a table in the center of the room. Because of the "don't play" signs, I sat on the side away from the condiment assortment. There were three paths to the tables behind me. All four restaurant staff used the narrow gap beside my seat to access them. It was not generally the most direct, and since my shoulder protruded into the path, not the most open. I was bumped repeatedly. Not really worth complaining about, but it was enough to keep me from relaxing.
Still, it was good food at a good price with mostly great service. I will likely be back, but I will definitely sit in a corner away from walkways...

Read morevisited this location on a summer morning. June to be precise. I visited alone, the decor was dated but it seemed like a nice place. they offered me a booth near the windows. service was fast and dependable, but all the staff were both awkward and cold. they treated everyone else with a happy smile and kind service, but they were awkward to talk with and were just relatively strange when they came up to me. the food itself was decent, not the best but it did its part. had a stack of pancakes and some toast, along with a cup of coffee. I’ve had better at other restaurants, especially the Black Bear far down Soscol. regardless I think the cafe is just decent at best. better for the elderly who’ve likely favored this old-styled restaurant over others with...
