I came to IKKAI on memorial day weekend on a Sunday with two friends for lunch. It was surprisingly not too busy and we were able to be seated immediately. We were able to order from the dinner menu when we visited. Note: Outside drinks are not allowed -- but the staff stored our drinks in the fridge as we ate. We ordered the Ikkai Sashimi ($40), the Main Street Roll ($13) and the Sake don ($35). The Sashimi and Sake don came with a salad and miso soup which were decent. The Sashimi was overall good and plated beautifully, although the cuts were smaller than average. There were two different kinds of salmon -- my guess is salmon and ora salmon. The ora salmon (fattier) tasted especially fishy, as if it wasn't super fresh; however, everything else was great. The sake don came with a lot of pieces of salmon and some baked salmon with mayo on the side, which was a nice surprise. My friend said that the main street roll was the best crab roll she has ever tried (she loves crab). Overall, I would say that the value of what we ordered was not bad. The taste of the sushi was also good for the area. The portions are definitely smaller, but the presentation was definitely a nice touch. I will definitely return to try other dishes in the future!

If you’re looking for the freshest sushi in the Chicagoland area, look no further than IKKAI. The quality of fish here is on par with the finest Japanese imports you’d expect to pay $150+ per person elsewhere, yet at IKKAI, you’re only spending around $16 per roll. It’s an absolute steal for the caliber of sushi you’re getting. Naperville’s very own omakase experience is a game-changer—no pretentious vibes here (Chicago Omakase is very pretentious) just incredible food. I’ve tried high-quality sushi across the U.S. (check my other reviews!), and I have to say IKKAI holds its own. I haven’t been to Japan yet, but I honestly believe this is the BEST sushi restaurant in Naperville. The competition simply doesn’t compare when it comes to the quality of fish. I just have one request: MAKE A COCKTAIL MENU! This would definitely elevate the dining experience here. There was a slim selection of sake, wine, and beer. A special shoutout to Paul for his welcoming service, impeccable attention to detail, and for curating an awesome playlist that I just had to ask for the YouTube link to! The overall experience at IKKAI is nothing short of amazing. There are not many good places to eat in Naperville, but this is their best restaurant. Don’t miss out!

Fish quality is inconsistent and has gone down over the years. During my most recent visit, the service was as expected and the shrimp tempura roll was fine. But the nori in the spicy tuna roll was too hard to chew and the texture was off. The tuna was overworked making it mealy and mushy. On my visit before this one, the nigiri was decent but the uni was not fresh with that bummer of an aftertaste that you don’t want with MP uni. In winter, they need a winter vestibule, space heaters, or at the very least, lap blankets like ski town restaurants. It’s way too cold to eat without wearing your coat, and your legs are cold the entire time. Even the men had their coats on. I want nothing more than for independent, hip cute spots like Ikkai to exist in Naperville, but the quality of the ingredients can’t be compromised. I’m really rooting for Ikkai to ramp up the ingredient quality again and continue to refine and sharpen up on a few sushi techniques and skills (rice, temperatures, cutting/slicing etc).

This restaurant experience was an absolute nightmare, one that will haunt my memories forever! If you're looking to be humiliated and screamed at, in front of your children, then this is the place for you. At one point, it got so unbearable that we contemplated calling the police.

We decided to order some of their specialty rolls and, for my daughter and me, a heartwarming Udon soup. I made it crystal clear to our waitress that we wanted two orders of soup because my daughter adores Japanese Udon. So, we placed our order, one shrimp tempura Udon and the other Udon listed in the Udon section of the menu.

When the food arrived, it was a disaster. Instead of the second Udon soup we had ordered, we were served a dish with no broth, just boiled cabbage with some shrimp thrown on top. We immediately reminded our waitress that we had asked for two soups and that we definitely did not want the cabbage and shrimp concoction. We stressed the word "SOUPS."

But then came the shocker. Our waitress flat out refused to take it back, insisting that this was precisely what we had ordered. Frustrated and furious, we had to request the restaurant manager's intervention. We even expressed our dissatisfaction with the entire ordeal and hinted at leaving a less-than-glowing review.

The so-called manager appeared, but he was severely lacking in any semblance of customer service skills. Instead of attempting to rectify the situation, he began shouting at us, repeatedly yelling, "Don't threaten us with a bad review! Don't threaten us with a bad review! Karma will come back to haunt you! Who do you think you are?!"

The restaurant was nearly empty, but the entire sushi-making crew in the kitchen witnessed the spectacle. My young children, aged 6 and 8, were petrified. My younger daughter burst into tears. At this point, I couldn't endure it any longer—I genuinely contemplated calling the police. I informed the manager that if he didn't cease his outrageous behavior, we would indeed summon the authorities.

His response was to shout at me, "So you want to call the cops, huh? You want to call the cops!" My kids were left traumatized, and I was left in complete shock. All I wanted was to flee that dreadful place as fast as humanly possible. If it were possible to give this restaurant negative 1000 stars, I most certainly would. It's a horrifying example of abysmal management and...

As a vegetarian and someone who is actually allergic to fish, I went to sushi with friends assuming I can order a cucumber roll or something of the sort. When I got here, I was excited to see they had a section labeled as "vegetarian" on the menu with many options! So I ordered two different rolls off the "vegetarian" menu assuming it was actually vegetarian. When the rolls came out, they put them right next to and touching the fish based sushi, so I thought I would just confirm if the rolls were actually vegetarian. Glad I did because the Funyuns and the Da Barb both were not, DESPITE being on the "VEGETARIAN" menu. The server let me know that the rolls with anything tempura-baed in them were fried together with the fish and had cross-contamination, making them non-vegetarian. They then said I should still pay for those rolls, buy new ones, and that legally they could call these rolls "vegetarian" because the state of IL had no restrictions around this. They were so incredibly hostile when all I asked was that they take these back as I couldn't eat them.

I understand coming to a sushi restaurant as someone who is allergic to fish that my options are limited and I'm honestly fine with having a plain cucumber roll. But what was shocking to me was that they felt it was ok to have a section on their menu SPECIFICALLY LABELLED "Vegetarian" and yet served non-vegetarian food in this. And then had the audacity to say they had every right to legally do this.

I would like to point out to this establishment that McDonald's was sued for this and that McDonald's settled this lawsuit.

My recommendation is to not list rolls that are not vegetarian in their "vegetarian" section. It's a simple fix and one that will prevent such issues in future. Alternatively, they could perhaps use a different pan or container to fry their vegetables that are going into...

Honestly loved this place, found out about it right around the time they opened and been going there almost every weekend ever since whether it was takeout or dine in. We never complained about the wait time even tho it would sometimes take over an hour to get food (sometimes 2+ hrs for takeout), we’d still come in couple times a month just because we thought it was worth it the amazing food! We made a reservation two days ahead for 4 people. We found out pretty last minute that other people can’t make it so we stopped by to ask if they can move our reservation sooner for just the 2 of us, they said they’ll call us within an hour or so. We stuck around just because we really love the food and atmosphere so we thought it was worth the wait. After waiting for 2 hours, it was the time of our original reservation and they called us to tell us our table is ready. We got there right away and sat down at the table, got our drinks and appetizers ordered. We mentioned again that the rest of the party can’t make it so it’s only going to be the 2 of us. The waitress told us they can’t take us and we have to leave and be put on the waitlist of minimum 45 minutes. We were literally told to grab our stuff and leave after waiting for 2 hours and being sat down and had our orders taken. Really disappointing considering it was our favorite restaurant and go to sushi spot for the past...
