Phat Bites — Restaurant in Nashville-Davidson

Roast Phat Bites Deli & Bar this was beyond bad. This is located in Donelson TN.

When you arrive the menu is on a podium, once you figure out what you want then you go tell the cashier and they ring it up for you. You can either eat inside or outside. The lighting change while inside but mainly stayed on blue making it look dimly lit inside and I wish that we had sit outside.

I ordered the Ruben without sauerkraut. I normally get water to drink, but I was wanting something different to try so I asked the employee behind the register what was a culture pop? He said it was like soda, but healthier. I asked him if it was like a seltzer water and he said no. He asked if I would like to make it a combo and I said yes. I got a side of Mac & cheese to try also.

My friend ordered New Reality Sirloin Steak, Siviss Cheese, Avocado, Pesto Mino, Red Onion, Lettuce & Tomato on a Clabalta Hoagie Broccoli Salad Side $3.00/0.5 lb $3.50/ 1 lb $7.00 & also the Mac & cheese.

We sat down to wait for the little buzzer to go off letting us know our food was ready. When it did, one of the employees walked it out & sat it down on the Togo rack. Seemed kind of strange but okay. There was little to no communication with anyone there. I opened up the wild berries soda & found out it was indeed seltzer water!! I took one sip and that was it, the rest went in the garbage..

The Ruben has potential but was extremely bland. The Swiss cheese must have been hiding because I didn’t see or taste it. The fried potatoes were overdone & had absolutely NO seasoning on them. The Mac & cheese had very little cheese in it & it too was bland. Even adding salt & pepper to it, trying to give it SOME type of taste didn’t help. I LOVED the raw veggies & they was seasoned perfectly. Whatever sauce they have them in was delicious. My friend didn’t like them because they were cold. She would have preferred them to be hot which I’m glad they weren’t.

Her steak in her sandwich was also extremely bland. She said the best part of the sandwich was the ciabatta bread because it was nice & soft. The broccoli salad was very heavy with mayonnaise. She didn’t care for it.

They had forgot to give us our pickles which comes with a combo. She went up there and asked for them. They gave us three slices, which from the looks of it had a lot of seasoning on it. These were no pickles! They tasted exactly like cucumbers… They tasted nothing like pickles. The seasoning that they put on was extremely hot! I took one bite and I was done. She did like the seasoning on this, but again it did not taste like a pickle. It tasted like a cucumber...

Nice try. No cigar. The open, airy garage is not new to great coffee shops and eateries. But the good ones restore the garage grunge to feel comfy and look clean and trendy. Not Phat Bites. The Garage grunge remains. I immediately scan for the latest health inspection, while I weigh whether it is worth turning around and finding a different coffee option. No, I'll brave it. I ordered a half-caff latte. Sorry, we don't have espresso right now. Okay, then with normal brewed coffee. Please steam the milk. The final product was too lukewarm to have steamed milk. Either that or the coffee wasn't really hot to start with. Now select a table. No, that one has food crumbs on it. How about this one over here? More food crumbs. In fact, every table I checked..food crumbs, and a floor to match. Now for the ultimate sacrifice...a trip to the restroom. If you can find it, the cleanliness of the restroom seemed acceptable. But, then, with nothing but a single 40-watt bulb to go by. Well, let's just say I'd rather not see any better than that. I also ordered a rice krispy treat. It was large, which is nice. But it was too large to bite into and too hard to cut. My guess is it was a week older than I normally prefer my rice krispy treat. I am still processing this visit. Could there be regular customers who find enough charm to overlook the rough edges? Apparently, or they wouldn't still be in business. Maybe the food is fantastic and there is some personality that shines through every now and then (example, Big Al's Deli...five star food and five star welcome, even if the building is shabby around the edges. It just works there). Maybe Phat Bites is really a lot cleaner than it looks. So I give two stars on the hope of maybes. Otherwise, there are far too many coffee and sandwich shops in Nashville that get it right on look and feel to put Phat Bites on your bucket list. Some like the food, but I would...

Update Nov 2019 ^_^ I've been back several times throughout this year. From breakfast to their sandwiches and wraps, hummus, sides and soups... Food is fantastic! The crew has been really great too. Keep it up Phatbites!

Update Nov 2018 I have been back to Phatbites a few more times since my more positive experience over the summer this year and bumping up to 4 Stars. This place is truly turning around. The service and customer experience has improved tremendously. I had the chance to meet the owner and she's a very hardworking person. I enjoy trying their daily/weekly specials and new flavors. If you haven't tried the Guacamole or Lavender/ginger hummus, I highly recommend it! Don't be afraid of new flavors, just ask for a sample, no commitment and it will sell you on the goods :) Thanks everyone at Phatbites, keep it up and I really wish you more success.

Update 7/6/18 Returned again for the food quality earlier this week and I must say I noticed the improvements. Upgrading from 1 to 3 stars. They moved things around creating more space at the entrance and between tables for dine in experience. The staff was coherent, friendly, and service was fairly fast. I may return again this time hopefully sooner. Thanks Phat Bites for the amelioration.

Update 11/4/2017 Had to downgrade to 1 star... -horrible management -where is the owner?? -what a disappointment in staff Food takes too long too prepare because the employees walk around aimlessly. Often they do not look groomed and stand around not doing their job. Lately, they've always been out of something, especially for breakfast hours and service is horrendous. Expect long wait even during slow business hours... Food quality is still great so 1 🌟
