I don’t know what happened to Voodoo Gumbo. It used to be a pretty cool place with a hip NOLA vibe. Then they decided to start table service while still treating the place as a volume eatery.
Our most recent experience is telling. We got a table right away. The server asked us about drinks and appetizer at the same time. Not thinking, we ordered the fried catfish. My wife asked for white wine, I decided to try their Hurricane. (Their “Hurricane,” by the way, was basically fruit punch-maybe they opened the rum bottle to let the fumes soak in).
Our drinks arrived right away (no water), and the server already wanted to know what we wanted as an entree. We hadn’t even taken a sip of our drinks or gotten the appetizer!
Anyway, we foolishly put in our orders. Within two minutes, someone was at our table-with our entrees. When we pointed out that we had been waiting for an appetizer, the guy with the entrees adopted that deer-in-the-headlights look. I explained again, and he said he’d check on it. He came back two minutes later with the appetizer (we had already started on the entrees). We decided not to send it back. But really….
I will say that the catfish was good. The jambalaya was so-so (pretty heavy on the rice), while the red beans and rice were also pretty good. They can still cook.
But we can cook at home. We go out, we expect to have a leisurely dinner, conversation over our drinks, time to let the appetizer settle so we can consider the entree. We do not expect to be rushed in and out like we’re at a McDonald’s. If you want to operate a volume business, then put in a drive-through window. Don’t shove patrons into seats, rush them through the meal, and kick them...

Read moreWe had been wanting to try this place since we came home from our NOLA trip....craving all that good Cajun fare. Popped in on a Saturday mid-day and planned to get some gumbo to go, instead we tried every single soup they had on the menu plus some fried shrimp. Everything was actually quite good, delicious and authentic. Our favorites were the etouffee and the shrimp creole (only available on Fridays, unless they have leftovers for Saturday...we are so glad they did!) The red beans and rice was also amazing and flavorful. I would definitely go back for these three! You can't go wrong when Leidenheimer bread is being served. Typically, I really enjoy some more spice, but for my first time at VooDoo, I really wanted to just taste everything how the chef intended. I will say that the creole was a little on the salty side, but for me, that is perfect. If you like the salty side of a good dish....go in for the creole, for sure! We also tried the jambalaya, chicken and sausage gumbo and shrimp gumbo...none of these would disappoint! Breading on the shrimp was light and tasty (although I am not usually a fan of fried food...it was very good). Service was really great and we chatted about how the roux is made for each of the dishes. I had an Abita Amber with my meal. Great food and great value. We got a LOT of food for $52 and we brought home full dinner for...
