Found my new favorite sushi restaurant! Fantastic customer service, we were immediately greeted and seated. The ambiance was nice with good music and a great environment. The sushi was delicious and FRESH! I had a tuna spicy mexican roll and a tropical mango roll. The rolls where big in size in comparison to other sushi restaurants I have been too. The tuna and salmon literally melted in my mouth... soooooo delicious! I usually order a hand roll but I didn't because it was too much food. I was stuffed with just two rolls! However, next time I will get a hand roll because they look delicious! I saw a server taking several hand rolls to a table near us and let me tell you, the hand rolls look HUGE. They are the biggest hands rolls I've ever seen! EVER! I would say double the common size. My hubby had chicken yakisoba and it didn't disappoint. Overall, super happy with our experience. Don't worry about parking because there is plenty at the plaza! 10/10 REALLY recommend! UPDATE: 12.26.2024 After two years, I had to do an update. Hanaoka Restaurant continues to be one of my favorite sushi restaurants and now a ramen must have. The hand rolls are still huge and the rolls are delicious (they are definitely on the pricier side but the portions are huge). I tried the ramen for the FIRST time today after dinning here several times these past two years. I tried the large spicy ramen and was blown away. It was delicious and big! For $13!? You're kidding me! That is unheard of nowadays. The service continues to be impeccable and the restaurant is always clean. Definitely still recommend!

I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Staff was courteous and handled our large party well. We went in at about 2pm. Place was filled to about 2/3rds capacity. I had the bento box (14.95); it had quite an expansive amount of food. The chicken and beef teriyaki was thinly cut, ok but a little dry. Teriyaki sauce was just a tad salty, but most places do that. I suggest if you want leas salt ask for half the portion. Salad was fesh ams crisp with a thousand island dressing. Rice is the short graim variety, done well. The piece of shrimp tempura was fried lightly, yet crisp. There are sashimi pieces of tuna and salmon included (2ea). Very well cut and fresh. This was preceded by a cup of light miso soup that was one of the best I ever had. I know it is just soup, but its all in the preparation. California Rolls pieces in the bento were good. Rice had well defined grains. One thing that bothered me was that mango lemonade (5.00) had the syrup settling on the bottom. Asking partons to shake themselves is a no no for obvious reasons. Another thing is the restrooms lack privacy partitions (Mens urinal and one the ladies toilets). That has to be fixed right away. As for the server with the high tone pitch he wasn't annoying, and catered to all our requests. Have those that complain about his voice even consider that a personality trait, and something that should be not made fun of? He service and that of the kitchen was prompt. Go to this place, it has the right people preparing the dishes if reading between the lines. Hint Hint.

Loved this place. I saw it before but was reluctant to try it considering the many disappointing Japanese restaurants I've been to in San Diego. We ordered the Philidelphia Roll (which I didn't take a picture of because we were too excited when it got to our table that I forgot) and Sunrise Roll. There were more pieces than pictured but then, again, we got excited. My husband had the peach Chu hi and I got the Plum wine. The Chu hi tasted like the ones you would get in the can back in Japan, which we like. My plum wine though was amazing! It's the best I've had in San Diego so far and it came in a frosted glass which was nice. Be careful though. I only had a few sips and felt it. Although I also just had a baby and haven't drank in a while so that could be it too. My husband said the oyakodon was a little dry and was missing the hint of sweetness but he was also drinking a sweet Chu hi so yeah. I got tonkostsu shoyu ramen and thought it was decent compared to other places. It's not comparable to back in Japan but it's a quick fix. It's missing a little bit of the richness and heaviness tonkotsu usually has but it has the umami. Overall, I loved atmosphere and all the staff were great. Definitely coming back.

This was the worst experience I’ve ever had eating sushi in 20 years! I am from out of town and had never been here before, they seemed to have the highest reviews so my friend and I decided to try it out. She ordered a combo and some ramen, I ordered a Hanoake House roll and the spicey salmon with avocado added. The Hanoake roll had a description and the spicey did not. When I took a bite of the Hanoake Roll it was instant fishy flavor like it was bad, I choked it down somehow. Then I tried a bite of the spicey tuna and it had a spicey oil on it that repulsive. I had to spit that bite out. My friend took a bite of each and had to spit them out instantly. We notified the server then she sent some guy named Edo over who just started arguing and saying there’s nothing wrong and just because I don’t like it they weren’t going to take it off. He said “when I go to an American restaurant and have something I don’t like I just eat it”, I reminded him the fish was bad not that I just didn’t like it. Then he tried to say the spicey tuna with the oil is how the make it. I pointed out that no where in the menu does it say there’s spicey oil on the spicey tuna roll. He said he would go talk to his manager who conveniently wasn’t there. He came back and said how he was more generous than him and okayed the two items to be removed, but he continued to argue and say that’s how they do it. Very rude customer service, the product was bad and he didn’t want do the right thing. I wasn’t even asking for a replacement item, I just refused to pay for the food that would have made me sick. I told him over and over I didn’t want argue with him. The other rolls were palatable but they over cooked the rice and just had a mushy texture. The ramen was half par. I don’t recommend this...
