I am a Senior Business Rater and Reviewer for Google with over 2.3 million views. Since the 80's, I personally, have eaten at the Schooner. My family has eaten there since they opened. Today, my mother (a senior citizen) and I ordered a seafood gumbo. My mom ordered a bowl, and I ordered a cup, and I also ordered a whole stuffed flounder for myself. At the time of ordering, my mother told the waitress she wanted a bowl of shrimp gumbo instead, and the waitress said ok. After ordering, the waitress served me a cup of shrimp gumbo, and my mom a bowl of seafood gumbo, which my mom said she did not want. She had asked for shrimp gumbo! When the waitress came out, I asked if she could bring a few shrimp to throw in my moms seafood gumbo to make her happy, thinking I was helping the waitress, and not bothering her with bringing out another bowl. She then comes back and tells me that she has to charge my mother for the shrimp. I asked her why are we being charged for shrimp, when she messed up the order? Since the waitress was not going to help my mother, without charging her, I said just forget about the gumbo altogether. Then the son of the owner came out and asked me what was wrong, and I explained to him what happened. In his defense, he said he will not charge me for the shrimp, but now neither my mom or myself have the gumbo we ordered, and the guy told me the flounder was being cooked, did I want to eat the flounder or not eat the flounder? Well, since my mom had nothing to eat, I certainly wasnt going to eat my flounder in front of my mother, while she sat there without the shrimp gumbo she loves. It seems to me that the Schooner now seems to think that they are a name around the Golden Triangle, and if a customer, who is clearly in the right, should complain about a messed-up order, well then, who cares! The right thing to do was send out the right orders of gumbo, and to tell me the fish will be along shortly, like the father would have done. It is obvious that the waitress has such gall, as to go and tell her boss some lies about his very loyal customers, and a senior citizen, that it could not have been possibly her fault. Unbelievable! Whatever happened to the customer is always right? It is fine with us, and we will no longer visit the Schooner anymore, and instead, try some of the other seafood places out there like Tia Juanitas (Always packed) since the untruthful waitress destroyed a tradition in our family since the Schonner first opened. Thanks waitress! Thanks also to the son of the owner, who ultimately cared, not about longtime loyal customers, or senior citizens. Sure wish the old man was still around there, or even the fine woman who received her law degree. They had class! *The pic is of my mother, Benie Miller at the Black Bear Restaurant, now in her twilight years, who won a Brenda Lee Singing Contest in the 60's, hosted by Gordon Baxter, where she also received a recording contract with Decca Records in New York. She has owned night clubs in Port Arthur, such as, the Midship Lounge, 5th St. Lounge, Benibobs, The Lions Den, Aggies, etc. She was at the Keyhole Club. She played keyboard at the Balinese Club in Beaumont, just to name a few. My mom is this area, through and through, and she loved the Schooner! Well! Bye Bye Schooner! I hope you all will try and treat your customers with a little more trust and respect, like your loyal customers have done for you over...
Read moreAfter reading several local reviews, we decided to give it a try. I'm not one to go out of my way to give a "less than" review but here we are. We were seated right away & got our beverages quickly. Although, there are many items to choose from, it seems like just another menu from the area. The prices were high. I did not like that you have to pay $2 extra for grilled food or $7.95 to add a topping to fish. There is nothing special about this restaurant. The bread they give you to start was dry & tasted old. Our salads were floppy & the dressing was overly runny. The baked potatoes had a reheated flavor. We both ordered a platter to try a few things. The bbq crab was as extremely dry & there was no way to eat any of it. It was a crumbly mess. The scallops were like rubber & very tiny. The fried shrimp, stuffed crab, & catfish were very good. They do have good tartar & cocktail sauce. They also do not clear your table until you leave. We had to shimmy dishes & garbage to get it out of the way as we ate. As visitors to the area, we were not impressed with what should have been a genuine SETX seafood experience. I don't think we will give it a 2nd try. Maybe we just had an off night but with the $90 spent, that's not acceptable. I really hoped this place was going to be all the...
Read moreUpon walking in, it felt like I walked into a Dennys from the 1970s. It was cute, quaint, and clean. Most importantly, clean! We ordered margaritas. They were delivered fast and were super yummy. Since it was our first time eating here, I ordered a seafood platter. I subbed fried shrimp and trout for grilled. The trout was beyond amazing! 10 stars... the frog legs were good. My scallops were all undercooked and unedible. The shrimp were just shrimp, nothing special. The fried crab was a waste. The stuffed shrimp and crab had a good flavor, but the texture was mushy for my taste. "My husband loved it." Hubby ordered the snapper. It was not good. It did not taste like snapper at all. It tasted like tilapiađ€ą. Big difference there.... all in all, the prices were high for the overall quality. I must say we do have high expectations though. The service, top shelf margaritas as well as my trout were all very good. Also, as a side note, as it was our anniversary, our dear sweet waitress brought us out a dessert with a sweet happy...
