Visiting the New Glarus Brewing Company was not on our list when we were planning our trip to WI, but it should have been. Fans of Spotted Cow from our days in Ft. McCoy, we always tried to get a case to bring home. On our most recent trip to the Dells, some WI friends said you know the Brewery is not that far out of route on your way home. So a plan came together quickly.
We were towing our camper, so this review is from that perspective. That being said if you are in a traditional car or truck, this place is a must stop by!
When you enter the property there is a sign directing any vehicles over 8ft to the quick right, and there was a gravel area for buses and rvs. We were towing a travel trailer, about 27ft; so my husband backed it along the wood line. We were the only people parked there during our quick in and out. Maneuvering was no issue during our visit.
If we would have taken the time to read more on their website, we would have understood the hike and climb to the brewery. That being said our fitness and health is good, so it was a nice wooded walk. The signs along the path encouraged you to keep going. As we walked we noticed the campus was designed to be a gathering place, with benches and picnic tables.
Arriving at the sprawling building, our excitement took over and we wound up in the beer store prior to the gift shop and tasting room. But the workers there were super friendly and chatted with us. Our concern was how to get several cases back to our rig. Well great news, they have a gator ready to load up when we were finished shopping. Sadly this is not for transporting people, just fyi.
After stocking ourselves with beer, we headed to the gift shop. We were already informed of their military and veteran policy of a free glass, and I think one beer (our drivers license has a veteran seal or id required). We opted not to drink due to being our travel day, but we took the token and glass as fantastic souvenirs. The gift shop was great, and as long time, long distance fans of Spotted Cows we were happy shoppers.
Sadly we did not tour the brewery, but plan on to add it to future plans. If you have never visited the New Glarus website, you should and read about the history of the company. While we are taking home some delicious beers to enjoy, we know they won’t last. So, count yourself lucky if you can get a pint at your local fish fry watering hole or grab a 12 pack in Walmart. New Glarus Brewing Co is something WI should be...
Read moreThe architecture and the setting is breathtaking. Once inside is when things go bad. The staff is a bunch of young 20 somethings that are very condescending and borderline rude. Being from Milwaukee I have been on numerous brewery tours. I had been looking forward to this for a while. When I walked up to the bar to look at the beers I was shouted at by a young lady who told me I needed to go pay for tickets before being served. I was aware of this and wanted to see the beers first. Once I got up to the register the girl there was very short and didn’t say anything more than insert your card. When I inquired as to where the tour started another very rude young lady pointed and said back there in a very short and rude manner. I was highly disappointed. I would much recommend the tour at lakefront brewery or even the miller brewery tour over this one. Staff is friendly and helpful and enthusiastic at those. This pretty much ruined new Glarus beer for me. Then I went on the tour which is “self guided”. No guide explaining the intricacies of the brewing process. Just a few signs that give a brief overview of the brewing process and every door labeled brewers only on them. Save your time and money and go an hour and a half East to Milwaukee. The only reason I gave two stars was because I got a glass to take home and I enjoyed the...
Read moreVisited the New Glarus Brewing Company as I am new to Wisconsin and their Spotted Cow beer is a must have when residing in or visiting the area. The Tap room location was a little hard to find due to when you look up the brewery in google maps it directs you to a different location, but that isn't really a problem as they are expecting this and have a box with maps leading you a little down the road to the actual location. There are a couple parking lots once you get there, one right as you pull in and one farther up the hill. The first parking lot is near a trail which you will use to hike up to the patio area and tasting room. The hike is nice but uphill most the way, and I highly recommend it, but if you are with relatives that have trouble walking or you yourself do I would just park at the second parking lot up the hill. The Tap room is great with a nice selection of beer, after a purchase they give you a token you can use at bars in the town of New Glarus, and their beer depot which has bottles and 6 packs to purchase has a nice selection. Highly recommend this one, but you should know there is no food, the owners at the brewery love the town they live in and highly recommend you visit the town for food. 5 stars for a great experience, I will...
