Best place in town? Probably. The food is always perfect, and in giant portions. The staff is so nice and welcoming that you feel like family. The beers are always perfectly curated, and they'll let you try them to find your perfect brew. This is not some trumped-up hotdog stand. This is a very laid back restaurant with seriously delicious and exquisite food, a high-quality German biergarten restaurant, unlike anything in New Orleans. The dishes I've had here are all just as good or better than anything I had in three weeks in Germany.
Start with a pretzel, and I strongly recommend the horseradish dip with it. My girlfriend always gets the cheese pretzel, which is covered in a ton of warm melted jarlsberg (at least I think it's jarlsberg- it's a good melty white cheese that's not funky). These pretzels are no joke, best I've ever had.
The sausages are phenomenal, but if you really wanna be blown away, you gotta get the plate dinners.
The schnitzel covered in gravy? Superb. The Sunday-only pork shank special is the best f*ing thing in the entire world. It's enough meat for two or three people, especially if you get sides.
And speaking of sides, you simply must get the potato dumplings. Giant. Gnocchi. In. Gravy.
Get a slice of cake for dessert. The cherry is outrageously good.
As far as things I didn't love- we've had a schnitzel sandwich which was dry and kinda lackluster, but the plate dinner schnitzels are phenomenal. Definitely recommend the king brat if you're jonesing for something handheld.
They're closed at the moment for the holidays, so I'm taking a moment to write about this food, since I can't have it right now. This food is hauntingly delicious, so only go here if you want to develop a serious craving for something you never knew you needed so much.
PS, Bratz is dog-friendly,...
Read moreThis is a really cool place in the Bywater. The outdoor seating is filled with fans and picnic tables. There is also a bike rack inside the outdoor space which is really convenient for diners.
As for the food— I tried the pork shank several weeks ago and I wasn’t too crazy about it. The meat was on the drier side and definitely over salted, but I would like to give it another shot.
On my most recent visit I got the Nola schnitzel sandwich and warm potato salad. They were both tasty and fresh. I would definitely come here if you’re craving some German fare.
UPDATE: I’m not changing my star review, but upon my most recent visit I left disappointed.
I had the roasted pork shoulder with cold and hot potato salads as well as the egg noodles with gravy. While I continue to recommend the tangy and savory hot potato salad as well as the coleslaw. I will say the cold potato salad was runny and flavorless. In fact, I struggled to finish it. The egg noodles were hard/semi-soft/chewy with little flavor. I’m not really sure why this is on the menu as it was also difficult to finish. Both sides were disappointing. The pork shoulder was good, but nothing amazing. It was between dry and tender, leaving nothing to complaint about but nothing to brag about either. These are tell-tale signs of a slower business so I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt but after several visits I can’t continue to overlook it.
Overall, this place is okay but its dim interior and less than enthusiastic staff along with its inconsistent food quality make it just okay. Expect a 4-6 rating out of 10 in your mind when coming here. In other words, you should come here because it’s the only option for German fare in the city and/or you’re in the area but with no expectation for...
Read moreTucked away behind among several of the other dazzling gems in the Bywater region, Bratz Y'all can meet your need for meats, sweets, and of course, authentic German brews. The food menu at Bratz Y'all boasts a wide array of staple German dishes ranging from bratwurst, schnitzel, stews, potato salad, sauerkraut, strudel, and large soft baked pretzels (my personal favorite and high recommendation). Most of these dishes are prepared and cooked in a variety of methods, so be sure to carefully read each menu selection, and good luck trying not to order multiple things to sample! Also, don't miss out on there self made sauces including: garlic mayo, curry ketchup, and mustard. There is fairly limited seating inside of the restaurant, but there is a lovely patio area with picnic tables and fans / heaters (as necessary pending weather).
Initially, the beer selection can be intimidating, but there are several sizes that you can order ranging from your typical sampler size of 8-10 ounces, all the way to the classic stein holding 1 liter of your choosing. Draft and bottled beers are available.
While the service may seem slow, all of the food is prepared fresh for your consumption, so please be patient with the staff. Take a look around at the interesting memorabilia adorning the walls of the restaurant while you wait!
Once you are done feasting on the savoriness of your selections, be sure to take a stroll through Crescent City Park which is just 2 blocks from the restaurant front. Hope you...
