So first the good... this is still a cool bar and is a good spot to enjoy whatever thing they are showing on the TV that unless it is rugby I don't care about. They still have a decent selection of beer but it isn't the crazy huge selection they used to have. They moved the bathrooms all around so now they are much larger than before but I do miss my old saloon swinging doors that the old bathroom had to access it.
Well then now the bad.... Donkey Balls the new ownership got rid of the long time food vendors and did their own kitchen and while they kept mostly the same menu it isn't anywhere nearly as fantastic as it used to be and in fact it in many cases just isn't very good. They gimped up all the decorations and moved them all around.... They no longer have Creole Mustard like they had for decades before with the past owner. The menu is all changed up and moved about now but I initially thought, "at least they kept my Radiator Special po boy..." except now that po boy pretty much sucks and is nothing like what it used to be! It is so frustrating that they had to change EVERYTHING in the food category especially what WAS one of my PREVIOUS favorite po boys ever that they have just ruined! I even made the extra effort and tried to sample another one of my past favorites here with the roast beef poboy and it was served COLD with un-melted cheese...
Please bring back the past long time food vendors that made exponentially better food that tasted like New Orleans food... which at this point probably isn't even possible anymore but I can hope and dream still... The food now tastes like somebody from Colorado trying to make a po boy...
At least bring back the Creole Mustard!
Overall I just go here to drink except when I need to be painfully disappointed and try the food again... As far as the food goes I have to put it in the Ain't Dere No More category for my taste buds... your experience...
Read moreAs someone who like to get his drink on (Tom Pastrami doesn’t hold back when the waters flowin), I have frequented quite the amount of bars. One could say that second to maybe John Taffer of Bar Rescue, I am the undisputed king of bars. I know them I love them and they love me back. As such, I don’t say this lightly: Cooter Browns may be the most magical place on planet earth. Even better than Disney World. First things first, when you roll up there you take one look at the place and you realize “Wow I am at a man’s man bar.” Cooters looks like the bar you dream of as a kid. TVs everywhere and rustic beauty. The atmosphere is great and very welcoming with the classic New Orleans charm. There is also literally any beer that you can dream of. They’ve got like 400 beers from the usual Bud Light to amazing local IPAs they’ve got it all. If you really feel like forgetting the night order up a pitcher of the 10% abv IPA they have on tap. Trust me it’s a dream come true. The food is absolutely next level tho. It doesn’t matter what you order you will nut in your pants that’s how good it is. I order both the shrimp and chicken finger baskets and it was like God came down from heaven cooked up some fried goodness and then went right back up. I feel blessed just for the opportunity to taste it. Could’ve have had better shrimp unless they dived straight into the ocean picked up some shrimp swam up and deep fried those babies real quick. My buddy Ricky ordered up a burger and ooowee that baby was fine. It was juicy and had that nice meaty flavor master grillers dream of at night. The service was also fantastic. Although I don’t remember too much (those pitchers can sneak up on ya) our waitress was the definition of Louisiana southern lovin. She was quick polite and could crack a joke like one of the good ol boys. Overall I could not have had a grander time at Cooter Browns. Tom Pastrami...
Read moreCooter Brown’s Tavern is probably the best late night eat in NOLA. The menu contains classics such as po’ boys and muffulettas and other more universal dishes such as cheese fries.
For our appetizer, we had the cheese fries and boudin balls, which were better than some other (more expensive) places in NOLA. The fries tasted fresh and still had some crisp even though they were smothered by a smorgasbord of cheese. The boudin balls were also good, however, if you are looking for a single appetizer, I would pick the cheese fries.
Their Shrimp po’ boy was well-seasoned and the shrimp was probably the best I have ever had. However, the bread could have been a little fresher as it was fairly chewy. Nonetheless, I would recommend the sandwich to anyone looking for a shrimp-related dish.
I also had the muffuletta, which was very good to me even though I particularly dislike olives. The olive salad was not too heavy, which allowed the pepperoni and other meat to shine through. Overall, this was probably our table’s favorite dish and I would definitely recommend it.
For dessert, we tried the French Toast Bites, which were honestly a bit underwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, they are not bad, but definitely not good enough to fulfill someone’s...
