I was highly recommended to Deanie’s after hearing so much about food seafood. I was advised that the price is high but I would not be disappointed. I do not mind paying for service and good food. On 2\27 I visited for the first time and brought along two other friends who have not been as well. When we walked in we were met by a waiter who we felt wasn’t too friendly and acted as if we have been here before. He told us we can sit anywhere and he would be there shortly. We chose a table and sat down. Received potatoes and butter for the table along with water and menus. The waiter asked if we were ready to order and the table orders. One person ordered the seafood platter and someone else orders fried crab, then I ordered the red beans and rice which included sausage and a corn muffin. I also ordered sides of to try. The table get their food and I noticed that the red beans and rice did not include the sausage and I was missing the corn muffin. I walked over to a staff member and asked if the red beans and rice included sausage and was told yes. I asked them to get our waiter. I also saw a menu and read what was all included. It stated sausage and a corn muffin. I told my waiter and he stated that they were out of corn muffins but can give me a side of bread. The waiter ordered a side of sausage for me. When I cut the sausage up and added it to the red beans and rice I was completely turned off. As you can see the pictures before and after I received the sausage you can tell this was not how red beans and rice are suppose to be cooked. I believe the waiter took the order wrong and just ordered me red beans and rice with no sausage. I asked for the manager and the manager came over. The manager whose name is Mike had the worst attitude. He asked me what was wrong and I spoke about the red beans and rice. How do you cook them and the manager said we cook the sausage with the beans. I stated the sausage is not cooked with the beans. I had no sausage but before I could say something else to clarify the manager cut me off and said well the waiter brought you a pound of sausage to make up for it. He said it completely nasty and disrespectful especially speaking to a table full of women. In order to not cause a scene and disrupt other customers who we dining I just told the manager that is fine. The waiter returned and asked what can we do to make it right. I just said they can remove it from the bill. When the waiter returned we received 3 separate bills that had add gratuity. It was suppose to be one bill as the waiter never asked us if it was together or separate. I felt the waiter felt he should get a tip even though we were unsatisfied with the food, his service, and dealt with a rude manager. The rest of the staff was kind and tried to help but from my waiter and the manager Mike at the location on Magazine street I would never return. I would not even recommend any person of color to dine at that location as the manager was rude and very disrespectful toward women. I would even give another location a try but seeing how we were handled I’m not comfortable as this speaks about the business itself. It’s bad enough we all are going through tough times but to receive that attitude from the manager of all people who seemed unbothered by my questions and answered them in a nasty way. Maybe there needs to be a training for management and wait staff on how to properly make customers feel comfortable. By this being my first time I wasn’t asked if it was or even treated like I was a paying customer. I was treated like I didn’t belong there and I should have not dine in there either. I did make a report back to those who recommended me and it hurt them to hear me tell them my experience. It will not be a recommendation from me to anyone especially to that location. I want to see businesses thrive especially during a pandemic but I can’t wrap my mind around the treatment from the male staff (manager & waiter) at the magazine location toward...
Read moreTo the owners of Deanie’s Seafood,
I am writing to express my deep anger and disappointment regarding our recent experience at Deanie’s on Magazine Street. My family and I entered your restaurant, and both we and a couple of white ladies who arrived after us stated that we did not have a reservation. We were told that no tables were available but that there was space at the bar, which we reluctantly accepted. As we walked past the empty table, my husband asked if it was available. The server said no and we assumed it was due to a reservation, which makes sense.
To my shock, just two minutes later, the 2 ladies who came in after us were offered that same table. When we questioned your server about this blatant inconsistency, she informed us that the restaurant does not adhere to a first-come, first-served policy and that it is up to the discretion of the server. This is not only unprofessional but also appears to be deeply rooted in racist behavior. There was another black couple that was seated at the bar and many other patrons agreed that this was highly suspicious and inappropriate behavior.
My husband, an 18-year veteran of the New Orleans Fire Department, has always enjoyed dining at your establishment, and he was especially disappointed by this experience. We have never been to this location. Furthermore, my 10-year-old son had to witness this unfair treatment, which is not the example we want to set for him. It is unacceptable that we were treated this way based on our appearance while others were prioritized.
I urge you to take this matter very seriously and ensure that all customers receive equal treatment. It is crucial for your staff to be trained on the importance of fairness and professionalism in the service industry. As a long standing member of the NOLA local community where you celebrate your Italian heritage, please dig deep within your moral compass. Much like African Americans, Italians have experienced many instances of negative stereotypes, violence and social segregation.
FYI, this occurred around 4pm on Sunday, March 2nd. Please review your footage. The server was a middle aged Caucasian woman with a pixie cut. No one should have to endure such a humiliating experience in your restaurant. In these trying times, everyone should be aware and held accountable for discriminatory practices.
Sincerely, Kirk...
Read moreIf I could give this place a 0 I would. When we walked in the smell was kind of off, but we attributed to what is supposed to be fresh seafood. We (5 people) sat and ordered appetizers and entrees. The waitress was cordial. The crawfish balls were very mushy, but we thought “it’s just one dish. Deanie’s was good back in the day.” The crawfish bisque tasted burned. I’m regards to entrees, the kid’s chicken basket was fine for kids. The catfish on the catfish platter and shrimp/catfish platter tasted like we were eating it right from the water. It had a very suspiciously disgusting taste to it. The shrimp were sub par at best, but it was the best thing on the table. The crawfish quartet had the same burned shrimp bisque with overcooked crawfish tails. We barely touched our food and informed the waitress that the food was not good. She asked if we wanted something else and we declined. The waitress could not make any decisions about adjusting our bill so the manager came over. I explained the issue and said that we were willing to pay for some of the food, but the fish was not edible, nor the items on the crawfish quartet. I mentioned that maybe the fish wasn’t cleaned properly and she went into this bit about where the fish comes from and it’s not bad. But ma’am no one said “bad”. I said “unclean.” She then became very loud and rude and said we had to pay for the food because we ordered it. But, we didn’t eat it. She also said the the dark roux is supposed to taste burned. She lost her couth and began yelling so that the other 4 customers could hear her. She stormed off and said she would get our boxes so we could get out of there. The compensation for the horrible meal was not nearly what it should have been. The food and manger are not worth a penny of your...
