2018 First and foremost, the old fashions are the best I've had anywhere. They don't have whiskey cubes, but that's the only thing lacking. They use expensive bitters and luxardo cherries, thin slices of fresh orange, and my personal favorite - makers mark whiskey.
Blue cheese fried oysters are amazing, though I'm not normally a fan of fried oysters these have me converted. Blue cheese has excellent flavor without being too powerful and a perfect creamy texture. The oysters have a tasty and crisp corn meal breading that's light and flavorful. It's a good size portion and easy to share. Will definitely order again.
Baked Oysters with foie gras- freaking amazing. Not quite dragos, but dang close. Also worth getting.
Crab cakes are mostly crab and very tasty. A little small and harder to share, but if you really want a crab cake, you won't be disappointed by the flavor and texture. Order comes with 2, if I hade to choose, would go with the oysters.
Gumbo is standard, not bad, but nothing special.
Boudin balls - not really my thing, but they do come with and excellent stone ground mustard. It was good enough for me to eat one, so if you like boudin balls these are probably excellent.
Stuffed catfish was excellent- fish is perfectly cooked and has the same light and crisp breading the fried oysters have. Stuffing also has great flavor and plenty of bits of other seafood. I got it with a side of red beans and rice which looked good but was too stuffed to eat, and sweet potatoes.
OMG Seeet potatoes have banana or something in them. Try it before you knock it, the taste certainly blew me away. Will always order sweet potatoes as a side when we come back.
Smoked ribeye was mind blowing. I usually like my steaks rare, but I stole some medium and well done of other plates and was sorry I didn't take a chance. Super tender meat, excellent smoked flavor, none was left when we left the table.
Mahi seemed a little over cooked, wouldn't do that again.
Pork chop was decent but I've had better and there is better here.
Duck was tasty but totally eclipsed by the steak...
Read moreI have to say we had a bad experience here start to finish. Came in mid morning when it wasnt too busy. Took 10 minutes after being seated to get any attention from a server.
Once we got our orders in, the ticket time was about 30 minutes. We ordered 2 basic breakfasts and the praline bacon, since many folks recommended it. Nothing special and these were just eggs, toast, and homefries (they call these hashbrowns here but they arent - they are just potato wedges not shredded). We didnt ask for anything special.
When the food finally arrived it was really bad. The praline bacon wasnt cooked on 1 piece - like LITERALLY RAW. So $8 for four pieces of sugar covered bacon, which was about 50% lard, and 1 piece RAW. What happened is the cook had 2 pieces on top of each other, so being sandwiched together the middle of them never cooked. They literally were pink and raw. Gross.
What was this person doing on the grill to watch the food? What does this say about how the place is being managed and run in general? Do they even care about what they are doing?
The next issue is our food was room temperature. Toast was cold and burnt.
Please explain to me how you let this stuff go out of the kitchen, and even further, the server lets it hit the customer’s table?
Ive seen this before in other places - locals rave about their home base because its the only place they go to. But frankly the food here was overpriced and sucked. Yes, this place sucked. It was downright awful.
I would not recommend eating here and certainly wouldnt go back. Ive had better food at the ballgame thats how bad this was. Ive had better food at a Waffle House. Seriously.
Only reason for 2 stars was the building decor. otherwise the health department should come in and look the place over. Im willing to bet the kitchen...
Read moreAnother highly recommended breakfast/brunch diner in marigny. Took friends out for Sunday brunch on a cold, rainy and miserable Sunday morning. The weather didn't deter enough people from also wanting excellent food so we had to wait outside. The upstairs bar and seating area are open if you can find somewhere to squeeze in. I ordered a couple of bloody Marys to help with the wait. They were good, just not strong enough. We toughed it out and were rewarded for our suffering. I think all of us changed our order 2-3 times waiting for the server as we were starving by then and Everything sounded and looked good going by our table. We ended up on the country breakfast, the chartes and boudain. While I didn't get to try the country breakfast, the charters and boudain breakfast were both delicious. The redfish on the chartes was some of the best this former Florida boy has had in a long time. My eggs and potatoes were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The hollandaise was surprisingly lite. The boudain with the poached eggs was equally good. I wish I could buy links of it for home. It didn't taste as rice heavy as some other versions. The spices were well balanced and married perfectly with the poached eggs. All of that was smothered in crawfish etoufee and paired with a literal pound of grits. We eventually got our app of praline bacon for the table which was good, but not worth the cost to me. As I said, they were slammed, probably almost 2.5 hours from putting our name in, to paying our check. From what I was told that's fairly normal, with wait times for seating generally being longer(they were short on service staff). Not looking forward to that as I already have plans for a return visit for the duck waffle they were out of on my visit. ...
