Where to begin. My family and I arrive to the restaurant, and although the restaurant looked shoddy, run down, and pretty empty, I said ok, let’s try the place because I heard the food was good. I had a 18 month old baby, and I requested a high chair and the horribly rude waiter said “no baby.” And walked away muttering something in Chinese. I was appalled considering there are FAMILIES that come to this restaurant. So on my way out to the car to find my stroller, I come across a mountain of stacked high chairs next to the exit. I took one myself and I waved to him showing him that he did in fact have one. He rolled His eyes, and was still muttering in Chinese. We sat down finally, and he came and threw the menus in front of us and said “you order now.” We all looked at each other, and said we needed more time. He HUFFED and left to get the cutlery and chips with duck sauce and THREW it on the table. The sauce spattered all over the tablecloth. I was literally in shock! We were so hungry and my baby was already settled that we figured we might as well finish the meal. The guy comes and slams the dishes on the table, and would hover over us so as to make us uncomfortable enough to leave. Funny enough, other patrons came in and were eating at other tables and the treatment was completely different. My guess is he was RACIST, since we were speaking in Spanish amongst ourselves. I have NEVER been treated so disrespectfully in a restaurant. I’m shocked they still operate, shocked that person works in the service industry, shocked treating paying customers that way is normal. Dear OWNER, I will not reconsider coming to the China Chalet. I will however make sure some authorities come and pay your establishment a visit. There is no way that legal treatment of anybody goes on in there, not to mention the questionable hygiene of said waiter (picking his nose, coughing a hacking cough with no mask or covering his mouth.) DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO WALK OUT UPSET, HUNGRY, AND WITH LESS MONEY IN YOUR POCKET. I couldn’t give less of a review, but if I would it would be -5 stars. Absolute...
Read moreFirst off, the food was good. Not amazing but good, I would consider ordering takeout from here if Empire Szechuan was not down the block.
The service however was inexcusably bad. I read other reviews and they are correct, at least one of their waiters are incredibly rude. I went on a Thursday night and there were several other tables. He was working alone, and pretty busy, but I observed him great each table with the same level of disrespect. His attitude is very unpleasant and when you ask any questions he is very dismissive. My 8 year old daughter asked him what kind of drinks they have, he waved in the direction of the bar and said he would come back. If I was not in a hurry, and with my daughter who wanted Chinese, I would have walked out. Then the order came a few minutes later and was wrong.
The food was good and I still left a 20% tip because I know these are tough times but...
The service is ruining that place. I would never go again. If you want a great sit down Chinese experience on Staten Island, check out Jade Island near the mall. They have been there for 40 years and the service and staff are...
Read moreThis place was fine under the original owner but after it changed ownership not so much. The first thing that was noticed was that for a late Saturday afternoon it was empty. All the tables were empty. It also had a run down worn look too as well.
So we are seated and when my son ordered and made a special request the waiter became very rude and was muttering in Chinese everytime he came over to our table, it was clear he was cursing us. He had something against my son for whatever reason and we couldn't figure it out. And when we were eating this waiter would be standing there STARING at us mumbling.
My son had to leave because he was very upset by this server and he didn't eat because he was afraid they may have done something to the food. I ate my dinner and paid the bill WITHOUT a gratuity and this guy started screaming in Chinese.
I'm not making this up. It was a horrible experience and of course trying to find the manager to complain to was in vain.
Needless to say we'll NEVER go there again and I believe I will make some phone calls about that bar they have. Some shady things...
