Seeing good reviews, I wanted to try this place. Unfortunately nothing stood out for me except pancakes. It is one of those run of the mill mediocre Korean places in the Flushing area.
First off, the menu is confusing at best. I needed to flip back and forth to figure out how I order them. It was especially true when I had to deal with some eyesores since they put incorrect Korean words. This gives out a vibe that the owners are not smart. The lady who seems be the owner got vexed and told me I must know what I want to eat upon stepping into this place. Well, I didn’t know this place exists and the menu is full of nonsense. They don’t seem to possess the fundamentals of Korean cuisine.
For example, the food I had doesn’t come with a soup which is, in general, basic in Korean dish. It is obvious that they don’t want to run extra miles to prep soups to make it complete. I could also see them cutting corners here and there. Due to this, this place fails to deliver full meal experience.
This is more obvious with the fact that they serve ginger tea instead of water. I know serving various types of tea is typical in Asian restaurants. Given that, this is the first restaurant I have ever had this. I couldn’t figure out what this awful thing was until the lady volunteered telling me it is ginger something and bragged about it. She doesn’t know ginger tea reduces appetite and feeling of hunger.
I don’t feel that this place deserves all these...
Read moreAmong varied definitions of culinary experience, this place caters to the notion of slow food with the finest care and ingredients. Jang Dok Dae breathes the couple’s commitment to serving unpretentious authenticity in food - if we accept the term not as the flavor, but as the quality specific to the purpose of the culinary creator. From the tomato salad (provided as a complementary starter) to the side dishes (also complementary) to the main items we chose (grilled marinated Kalbi, braised cod, and Perilla seed knife cut noodles), we were treated with their respect and passion for “honest” food. On a more specific note, Kalbi was tender with a hint of earthiness, satisfying our expectation of roasted meat. The braised cod was so tender and soft that it evoked the images of a marshmallow. Perilla seed knife cut noodles were packed with none other than ground perilla seeds, giving the broth the nutty and creamy fullness. Caveat: we were told that all knife cut noodles would be kept off the menu moving forward. Although unfortunate, they provide so many options that will keep your taste buds entertained.
This place embodies one of those restaurants you get to appreciate for the thoughts, efforts, and skills that go into its culinary creations. In the city inundated with fine dining options, Jang Dok Dae still stands out on its own merits. A restaurant of this caliber serves to remind that there’s always a hidden gem waiting to...
Read moreI recently visited the Jang dok dae restaurant with my mother and had an incredible dining experience. The cod, crab soup, and chives with pepper pancakes were all expertly prepared and delicious.
One thing that stood out to me about this restaurant was the focus on clean and healthy dishes. It's refreshing to see a Korean restaurant that doesn't rely on the typical, heavy dishes that are often associated with this cuisine. Instead, Jang dok dae offers a unique and sophisticated take on traditional Korean flavors.
The cod fish was a nice twist on the classic dish and added a touch of sophistication to the meal and the crab soup was rich and flavorful. The Chives with pepper pancake cooked to perfection.
The restaurant is a hidden gem and I was glad to have discovered it. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, making it the perfect place for a romantic dinner or a night out with friends. The service was top-notch, with the staff being friendly and attentive throughout the entire meal.
In conclusion, I highly recommend Jang dok dae to anyone looking for a unique and healthy take on Korean cuisine. The food was outstanding and the atmosphere was delightful. This is a restaurant that truly stands out from the rest, and I can't wait to return for...
