The Best & largest slices in the Bronx.
I love my food prepared by the people most famously accredited for preparing them. I love my Shrimp with Lobster Sauce traditionally prepared by Chinese Restaurant owners, I love my Seasoned Rice and Curry Chicken traditionally prepared by Jamaican restaurant owners, I love Arroz con Habichuelas traditionally prepared by Latin restaurant owners, and I love my Pizza traditionally prepared by Italian restaurant owners. The authenticity is definitely in the traditional preparation and the incredible taste confirms it.
John And Joe's Pizza restaurant has been around forever.
We have lived in this neighborhood for over two decades, and no other pizza comes close. It's like biting into the geographical boot heel of Italy. No... Seriously. It's that good. The taste is flooded not just with seasoning... But love, care, tradition, culture, values, and ancestry.
If you've ever wanted to go to Italy, but haven't the time, or the duckets...make time to stop over to John and Joe's. They have a variety of toppings, and can create pretty much whatever you ask, if they have the ingredients on hand. They've never disappointed my sisters, my partner, or me...in all these years. Lemme tell you a little story about John And Joe's.
"The 9th Largest Blackout in the World"
A few years back, (2003) we were hurled in the middle of a huge blackout territory. It was so aptly titled "The Northeast Blackout." It encompassed knocking out all power for a radius of "EIGHT STATES, including parts of CANADA, and affecting over 50,000,000 people. Some of you may remember. It was massive. It went from 4 in the afternoon until, for some, 2 Days.
This was August 14. It was hot. My apologies, I meant to say, it was...HELL-HOT...🔥🔥🔥.
Two of my sisters came over, and we waited out the blackout, hoping it would end soon. As night began to fall, we grew hungry for dinner. Couldn't make anything and didn't want to constantly open the fridge, causing our food to spoil. Time was running away and we still couldn't decide what to eat. By now it was 11:00pm, and pitch black outside.
"Let's get some Pizza," Peaches exclaimed to the hungry hot bodies in the room.
We decided to get some pizza from John And Joe's Pizza Restaurant on Lydig Avenue in the Bronx. How did we know they were even open this late at night, and in the midst of blackout territory??? We didn't know. But what we did know was that, "Nothing beats a try but the failure to try" - Maya Angelou. We knew that we were one of the very few in our building with a land-line. And after attempting to John and Joe's, we learned...so were they. And the proof was when we called, John and Joe's, and a very warm and friendly voice came over the receiver.
"Welcome to John And Joe's, can I take your order?"
I smiled deep inside. It was as if Italy came over to the Bronx to rescue us Bronxites by preparing some foods the only way they know how... Deliciously. I said to the warm voice, "Oh my God, you're open!" and he replied by saying, "Oh, yes darling, we are here and open for business, what can I get yous?" I smiled inside even wider. "I'll be right over!"
So, my big sister Bo, and Peaches took off to get the order. When they returned they told us off the love shared to all, and how they didn't try to take advantage of the situation. Their prices stayed the same.
We have never forgotten that night or John And Joe's for their incredible hospitality, delicious pizza, and amazing traditional style.
But don't take my word for it,
