This is more than a story about a legendary cheesecake in the Bronx. S&S Cheesecake was founded by holocaust survivor Fred Schuster in 1962, 21 years after he was forced to flee his home country of Germany. Fred is now 97 years old, but he was able to come in to the bakery to tell us his story first-hand; and to taste a slice, for quality-testing purposes.  “Don’t gild the lily,” is the advice he’s given to his son-in-law, who now operates the business. Accordingly, the recipe and process has gone unchanged for 6 decades. 🤯 Much love to @nycgo , who have asked us to #SavorNYC by highlighting New York’s eateries and everyday heroes. Make sure you hit that follow button for more stories from the 5 boroughs. #RighteousEats

I'm one of the original customers. Yes, I am old. Ages ago, S &S was a well kept secret in the catering world. I truly believe they set the standard. My Father was in the food business, and he would bring home the GIANT cheesecakes for parties and family events. It was a special treat. As an adult, I lived with my wife in Riverdale. It was great to be able to get a cake from the Bodega or Candy store on their block. Until recently, I had never seen S & S's gate open, because they worked through the night. I went there 2 days ago and it was a happy sight to see it open, on a very busy street. We also lived in downtown Brooklyn, and I felt that Junior's was all about hype. The obvious difference is quality, and a touristy establishment versus an artist who has always been consistent. The newly self annointed FOODIE experts continuely show their ignorance. But they are loud. I have learned that people who are loud, are usually wrong. Thank you S & S for being a memorable part of my life. Thank you for always being the example of how a quality food business should be run. BIG STANDING OVATION!!!!

I haven’t been there in years, I remember how great it was when you walked in and they were baking cheesecakes and the line was out the door. Bought three cheesecakes today worth $87 and they are horrible! Definitely not the same taste or size as in the past. As someone above stated the crust was raw in the the one that was given to me was probably sitting there for days! My pictures will show! Zagat rated maybe once upon a time but as my wife said I’d rather of eaten a Costco cheesecake. Don’t know if it’s new owbers but I saw a response that they’ve been in business for 60 years, but that doesn’t mean that they are serving quality stuff in 2023, maybe in 1963 till 2021 but definitely not now! The worst, horrible!

I'm not a cake and sweets dessert person, but I've had S&S at parties, or something, and people have asked me to pick one up on the way to work a couple of times, since it's right near the subway I'm preferential to Italian cheesecake, but yes, it is the best cheesecake. It comes in one flavor, plain. No toppings available, and no toppings needed. In fact, if you eat cheesecake as infrequently as me, having a topping just covers up your once in a decade taste of cheesecake. And, if it's once a decade, you might as well have the best. Just walk over to the (small) factory door. knock, wait a minute until someone with an apron and hair net comes to the door, hand them the money for the size you want (large or small-and if you are taking the subway, be aware that large is like carrying a pizza) and in a minute, someone will come back with your cake. If it's closed, just look for a sign in the window of a few stores within a block that sell it, you you won't be...

I ordered a cheesecake to be sent to my sister who I'm visiting. My sister and I have been ordering these same cheesecakes for over 20 years... What a disappointment.. they've obviously changed the recipe.. the crust was weird and kind of greasy.. and the cheesecake was dry and actually crumbly... it looked different... it TASTED old and dry but more than THAT... the recipe has to have changed because the crust even LOOKED different... And.. the cheesecake is at least a pound less than the weight the proclaim... I ordered a five pound cheesecake and the Fedex scale read 4 pounds.. including the box..? Really.?.. I love good cheesecake but I'll be going elsewhere.. it's in the refrigerator and it would normally have been long...
