This restaurant is on its last legs. It once had a great staff and made terrific food, even during the pandemic! I stopped by today for the beef teriyaki lunch special, I wanted the beef to be done to medium my side was sashimi. The soup and salad were fine, hard to ruin. The bento box came and the waitress knew it was bad before she placed it in front of me. Normally the beef is sliced and placed to look like a single piece of steak with a little separation, not my plate of food! it looked like a bad stir fry and every piece of meat looked like they came from different cows and every piece was so over cooked, my leather boots looked softer! Was the kitchen really busy, you ask me? Only one other person entered after me and he order the 3 roll sushi special! I mentioned to the waitress I ordered my meat to be cooked medium and she blamed a busy kitchen! I told her I would reluctantly eat it because I didn't want to wait longer for another piece to be cooked and she seemed pleased. But as I tried to eat, I also tried to assemble the meat as one piece and couldn't! I called her over and asked if it was leftovers, ( that would explain why it was dry, over cooked and tasteless) , she swore it was made to order even though it was overcooked! Sashimi was my side and it must have been a new rookie because each slice of fish was thick enough to be 2 slices, that was a loss for the restaurant but good for me!. A refill of tea didn'tarrive until the check came and as she took away the bento box, I showed the waitress that the pieces of meat weren't from the same steak, the thickness and widths of the pieces I left in the box were all different! She was annoyed I noticed but she said nothing. I can never recommend Mottsu ever...
Read moreYesterday, my wife and I went to Mottsu to give it another chance after being disappointed with the quality of food a month ago. On Friday, at 8pm, the restaurant was empty and remained this way (except two of us being there), which is not a good sign for a restaurant that is located in such a busy and hip area (in the past it was our favorite Japanese spot, and it used to be crowded at that times). However, we gave it a try and were again disappointed by the quality of food. The two standard rolls my wife ordered tasted fishy and disintegrated after the slightest attempt to grab the pieces with the chopsticks. In the end, my wife spent the night with an upset stomach. My filet mignon was tasteless and overpowered by a tasteless sweet sauce. The restaurant should definitely do something about improving the freshness of their food. The only positive experience we had was the attentive and...
Read moreBeware of any special rolls that say "fried" in it the description, as it's probably not what you're expecting. We got the Houston Roll for the kids and the restaurant literally rolled the sushi roll in tempura bread crumbs and then fried it. The rice turned mushy and soggy, which aren't qualities I want in my sushi rice. Being that I have never had a sushi roll from any restaurant that they actually fry, I just assume that crunch/crunchy/tempura in a sushi roll's description all mean using crispy bread crumb type things in the sushi roll itself without actually cooking the roll.
We were in a pinch to get a quick bite before heading to REI. Overall, the non-"fried" foods were passable food but not memorable. I split a bowl of ramen with my other child and it was okay. Service was attentive and food came out in a...
