UPDATE (Sep 2024): Even though I ate here a month ago and still love their food, I cannot eat here anymore after seeing that they have a B grade from NYC Health and read online why they received that grade. Until things change, I will not be going back.
ORIGINAL REVIEW (2022): Finally visited after wanting to come here for a while and was not disappointed. Prices were fair, food was good, and the atmosphere was pleasant (although I DID come at an usual time: Sunday at 9pm).
Inside was smaller than I thought it would be, but I liked it. It has a nice "taverny" feel and also a couple TVs for entertainment. There's a bar, but also ample seating area so it can definitely be a family-friendly dine-in option for people in the area.
It's not too far from the J train so the location is also convenient to people who don't live in Woodhaven.
As for the food, I really liked the wings and fries. I ended up getting two orders. I also tried the fish and chips, but I wasn't a huge fan of the fish because it had too much batter which didn't seem to be thoroughly cooked, but other than that, it was pretty good.
Also, something to note is that the drinks were a bit... odd. Ordered a coke and ginger ale for the table, but it didn't taste like Coca-Cola or a popular brand of ginger ale. They tasted like a generic "cola" and "ginger ale". They weren't BAD, but I wish I knew beforehand that Neir's didn't serve Coca-Cola products if that were the case. If they WERE using Coca-Cola products, then their soda machine was not mixed properly cause the drinks were definitelyyyy off.
Overall though, it was a good experience and I will definitely return. Our server, Joseph L was also pretty nice...
Read moreEveryone kept saying go "Go to Neir's for the brunch, it's so popular" so I finally made my way there with my husband on a Sunday morning thing it would be packed to the gills, it wasn't. In fact no one came in the entire time we were there which was actually kinda nice. We were told to sit wherever we wanted and picked the seat closest to the air conditioner, lol.
They are very proud of their place in movie history which is really sweet to see and hold a lot of honor for Woodhaven as a neighborhood.
As I don't eat much my husband and I split the steak and eggs brunch platter which comes with a pan seared steak cut for you, a mountain of scrambled eggs, and for some reason every brunch item comes with mashed potatoes and a mixed green salad. It was, hands down, one of the strangest meals I've had in a while, but tasted decent enough. The steak was well seasoned and juicy, the mashed potatoes might've been boxed idk, but they were smooth and came with gravy. The salad was fresh, and while I'm not a fan of crumbly scrambled eggs they eye good and not dry.
The wait staff was attentive, but you know we were the only ones there so it would've been kinda weird if they weren't, and left us to talk and take in this historic tavern.
The meal plus drinks was about 35$ not counting tax and tip. I could see going back here again to grab a drink and chill. It had a nice local bar energy to it and I enjoyed that. But as I don't drink alcohol and the food was good not great the experience was just okay, and sometimes...
Read moreI've lived in Woodhaven for 10 years and only recently found this place. So glad I did. It's a small neighborhood tavern with a rich history but you can read the other reviews. I'm writing about the food and the community. I had the burger and a grilled chicken sandwich there. Both were excellent! They were both so tasty that I actually crave them—but I'm on a budget so I have to resist. Besides the food, they have interesting community based around their events. I've been to their open mic nights twice now (performed both times—not that I'm a draw) but it was so much fun. Kenny runs the open mic, he's really nice and welcoming. Actually everyone there is like that, plus they're supportive. The majority of the performers read poetry, I was never into that but there are some really talented people that can touch you emotionally so I'm learning to appreciate it. There are also musicians that are really good. At the end Kenny leads the "Word Jam" where he starts playing chord progressions and other musicians join in and somebody jumps on stage and starts improvising lyrics. So much fun! I've also been there on their karaoke night and just meeting friends for drinks. It's an...
