Just returned from a trip to this restaurant. In honor of Juneteenth we wanted to celebrate with a real southern cooked meal that didnt come from our own kitchen. We arrived a few minutes after 8 pm and our order was taken within a minute of us arriving. We were greeted by a friendly young woman. We ordered two simple dishes, one fried chicken, and one fried catfish, and one slice of banana pudding cake. Each meal came with two sides, and the cornbread is extra. We then proceeded to wait, and wait, and wait, and wait. While we were waiting we had time to enjoy the ambiance, which was charming. It was late, so there were not many patrons in the dining room, but those that were seemed to be enjoying themselves. The environment was clean, however after that initial interaction with the hostess, no one came to check on us or give us an update. We were the only ones in the waiting area, with the exception of the dining room patrons who were coming and going. It wasnt until 8:50 that the owner came out and asked what we were waiting for. At this point we had endured a 45 minute wait to two plates that would have been prepared at Rib Shack on linden blvd in less than 15. When we explained that we had been waiting the better part of an hour he hurriedly went back to the kitchen. Within 5-7 minutes he came back with our food and a promise that we would enjoy it. He explained that his workers were from the community and they were trying to put things out faster. He made no gestures such as a complimentary desert or piece of cornbread as compensation for a near hour long wait for two entrees and a desert, and we didn't suggest it. Both dishes, four pieces of cornbread and one piece of cake cost $81.00. We left with our meals, and hoped it was worth the wait. The catfish meal came with green beans and potato salad. The fish was fried perfectly and was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This signaled that the fish had not been put in the fryer until the owner came out to question us. The green beans were well seasoned and the potato salad was decent. 3.8/5 My partner had the fried chicken with mac and collard greens. His was overcooked. The leg and thigh had been left too long in the oil. The mac and cheese was enjoyable, but the collard greens were “gritty”. The cornbread was good, but it was box made. 3/5 for his meal. The banana pudding cake 4.2/5
Overall i would try this resturant again, however i have noticed a trend when it comes to “our restaurants”, either the food is fast and mid, or good but slow. This is a case of the latter. The food was good, but waiting 49 minutes for two dishes in a not crowded...
Read moreI’ve always passed by this spot on my way home, and after checking out the menu and glowing reviews, I knew I had to experience it for myself. Finally, the day came!
From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly and waited about five minutes before being seated. My daughter and I got a high-chair table, which was surprisingly comfortable. The service was decent, but at times, I felt a bit forgotten by our waitress—until Mr. Dennis himself stepped in. Not only did he introduce himself, but he immediately recognized us as new faces and made sure our meals arrived promptly. His hospitality was top-tier, making us feel right at home.
Now, let’s get to the real star of the show—the food! We ordered the French toast with turkey bacon, a Country Breakfast, mac and cheese, cornbread, orange juice, coffee, and a red sangria.
✨ The French toast? My daughter devoured the entire plate—no crumbs left behind. ✨ The cornbread? Soft, flavorful, and just the right consistency. ✨ The mac and cheese? Hold up—let’s take a solid three seconds of silence because this was hands-down the best I’ve had. PERIOD. ✨ The catfish? Crispy, moist, and seasoned to perfection. ✨ The eggs? Fried just right. ✨ The biscuit? Fluffy and delicious. 🚫 The grits? They lost me—lacking that bold flavor punch the rest of the meal had.
The coffee was strong and bold—Mr. Dennis joked that it’s Starbucks, and honestly, it hit just right. The sangria? Smooth, refreshing, and absolutely delicious.
Overall, this place did not disappoint. Mr. Dennis truly knows how to make guests feel valued, and his attention to detail shows in the food. I’ll definitely be back for that mac and cheese and catfish, and I’m excited to explore more of the menu. If you haven’t been here yet, add it to your must-try list—you just might find your new...
Read moreWish I could make this a 3.5-3.8 Star review. Decent when you are in a rush for soul food and do not want to cook. Small portions with a high price tag but hey, inflation is no joke these days! Everything was seasoned well enough. The Turkey Wings are normal sized and not those steroid birds, thankfully. They were baked well but needed a tad more oomph. The Mac and Cheese also, needed some love. It was a small scoop, a bit overcooked and could use a more pungent cheese. The Collards also has the base of goodness but fell a bit flat. Instead of pot licka', it was watered down. It needs more savoriness aka smoked salted meat, whether pork or turkey, doesn't matter, it just needs it. And the green cuts can be smaller. Hate eating large leaves with stems attached. Again, a small scoop. The most generous portion was their Potato Salad. It's a nice sized scoop, think adult vs junior scoop from Baskin-Robbins. It has the standard Southern Relish flavor, not overbearing sweet but they could be a bit more judicious on the amount of mayo used, as it was a bit swimming. You want it to bind, not be soupy, which it was borderline but still good. The 3 Fried Wings were good and crisp. For the amount spent, could add 2 more wings to be a better portioned plate. We do understand inflation. Had the White and Red Sangria, which is like a thinned-out wine cooler. VERY light with a few (and I do mean "few") cuts of fruit. Overall, decent enough for a visit here & there or a quick takeout. Interestingly, they close early for weekends, considering the Arena is up the block. Parking is limited but can be found on a Residential side street. Customer Service is a 5! They're working hard to make your support a worthwhile and...
