I had discovered this tiny eatery last year when it did not even have any proper seating. Had read rave reviews of its kimchi pork bao. Got there early just 9 am one weekend- they had sold out the kimchi bao - so had the cabbage and pork bao and the kimchi dumplings. The bao was amazing and the kimchi great- so I knew the combo would be amazing. Just never got around to getting to Flushing before 9 am to make the trek from the 7 station to this place ( it is about a 20 min walk). Then yesterday on a particularly cold day - happened to be in Flushing past 4pm- felt like having hot kimchi pork bao- was not even thinking i would get any baos( as I had assumed it was a breakfast thing) was happy to settle for hot kimchi dumplings 😋 So I get there - the place has been revamped and looks amazing with proper seating! No surprise the kimchi baos are sold out but they have others. So I ask when do they usually make them - the very helpful and friendly staff tell me they have a batch in the steamer and it should be ready in 10 minutes! So all I had to do was ask - they make the baos round the clock! ( Duh! Me). Well folks I ordered two. It was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! 😋. Best bao I have ever eaten- the good people at Northern King are not stingy with their fillings! One I ate steaming piping hot ( it is massive) and the other for breakfast ( steam it for a good 15 minutes in a steamer and it is good as fresh) the next morning! Happy to trek any time for the bao! Well done -...
Read moreA rare find of Yanbian local specialty! I never thought that I could enjoy Yanbian soondae and naengmyun in the US. Yanbian is a region in northeast China and historically has been home to the Korean Chinese community. Yanbian cuisine is noted for a blend of Korean and Chinese culinary influences, which is also reflected in the Menu at this place. The egg and chive pancake is a classic northern Chinese breakfast food that people get on the go. The dumplings are also northern Chinese style in that the skin is thicker and the fillings are classic Chinese dumpling fillings. The Korean side of the menu features dishes originated from regions in North Korea (soondae and naengmyun, and maybe the corn noodles too). These dishes are different from their South Korean counterparts and those who want to experience a different kind of Korean food should definitely...
Read moreI ordered the malatang soup and shrimp and chives dumpling. The soup is wonderful. Imagine a fiery bubbling Sichuan hotpot filled with that tongue-paralyzing peppercorn soup. Well, worry not, the malatang soup here is not that. It is a dialed down version of a traditional Sichuan hotpot with just enough intensity for folks...not looking for too much intensity. I love their version which comes with cabbage, fish cakes, woodear mushrooms, glass noodles, and other vegetables. I don't like chives-only dumplings, so the shrimp 'n chives worked out great. This was comfort food for me! I'll leave the blistering Sichuan malatang at Haidilao for...
