Once upon time, Sorrento's was one of the best pizza shops in the borough. Despite stiff competition from places like Broadway Pizza & Pasta, Goodfella's Pizza, and Sammy's Pizza, Sorrento's managed to hold their own as one of the finest Mom & Pop pizza shops in the kingsbridge/riverdale area. It wasn't uncommon to see the tables filled with people of all demographics sitting down to enjoy not only a quick meal, but the company of their friends, family and staff while watching a game or movie.
That was a different time, though.
Now-a-days, things are different at Sorrento's. The infrastructure is the same as its been for the past 15 years or so, but crowds it once drew in have dissipated. You may still see people in their from time to time, but you'd be hard pressed to find it drawing in the crowds it used to. In fact, it's not surprising to see the staff kinda just loafing around waiting for something to do.
While part of this certainly is due to the proliferation of chain pizzerias offering specials and discounts most mom & pop shops can't, truth be told, Sorrento's loss of customers is mostly their own fault. A change of hands in owner ship, down sized staff and obvious cutbacks in quality ingredients has resulted in dishes that are a shadow of what used to be offered at the restaurant. Sure, it's still okay food, but compared to what it was in the 90s/early 00s, its gone very down hill.
To say I dislike Sorrento's now wouldn't be fair. I still order from them on occasion. But it's also not uncommon to be met with a sense of disappointment when doing so. You won't know this is you're new to the neighborhood, but if you're a long time customer, you can't help but be a little disheartened when eating one of their mainstays like the classic chicken, portabella and sundried hero. The chicken used to be thicker, breaded, and seasoned well. the veggies were sauteed and the bread was always toasted, and hell, even smeared with garlic and olive oil if requested. But not anymore. That sandwich lacks the richness it once held. It is no longer exceptional. It is simply adequate, much like the once proud restaurant said sandwich comes from.
TL;DR: 3/5. Okay food, but a shadow of it's...
Read moreNew Owner Posh is great. The whole family works there. Very friendly. Have fixed it up. New Menu, New Chef. Just what the neighborhood needs. A fresh start. The old place was just average. The old Sorrento's was just " going through the motions" this last year or so. The pandemic did not help. Posh and his family bring a new energy and life into the community. They have had success in running a Pizza place/Italian food already in the Bronx. Glad to have them in the neighborhood. The Co-op residents should check out what's new on the block. No need to call door dash or grub hub to get food from elsewhere. They are right around the corner like the throwback days of the neighborhood. What wrong with taking a short walk down the block and get fresh air and a hot pie? You can order too of course, but it's local, no Grubhub fees. You'll find me in there after getting off the bus from work for...
Read moreI ordered a pasta. I told the lady I wanted it al dente, in olive oil and to add fresh garlic. She added cheese which I never asked. The pasta was over cooked, had no olive oil or fresh garlic. I had lots of pain on my tummy. I don’t know what kind of oil they used since I specifically told her to use olive oil. I called the woman that is usually in front of the store collecting the money . She was very nasty, rude and told me she was not changing my order. She hung up the phone on me. I called back and left a message and told her she was unprofessional and this is a business and why did she hung up the phone on me. I was going to report her to the Health Department. I would not buy from this place again. My son advised me the food was really bad and the people...
