As my rating suggests, I loved this place! But let me start with a warning that will help you enjoy your experience: it’s a quirky local spot owned and operated by one person, so temper your expectations. The prices might seem a bit high, but considering the current economy, they’re justified by the shockingly good ingredients.
What you order may not be exactly what you imagined, but give it a chance. For instance, I posted a picture of my partner’s “avocado toast,” which turned out to be more of a sandwich. But you know what? It was great. Similarly, I ordered a salami “hero” that was served on a roll instead of a traditional hero. As a self-proclaimed sandwich snob, I initially felt misled. However, the simple sandwich was so good that it instantly made me happy. It reminded me of how the right ingredients can really elevate a meal. The bread was freshly baked daily by the owner, and the high-quality ingredients, including homemade mayo, made all the difference. She even gave us a homemade “hot sauce” which, while not what I’d typically call a hot sauce, was AMAZING. I even tried to convince her to start selling it on its own because it was that good.
I don’t eat out a lot anymore—I’m frugal and picky, especially when it comes to sandwiches—but this place left me feeling genuinely happy. That’s a shockingly rare occurrence nowadays.
If I haven’t convinced you yet, let me add that the owner seemed to know half the customers who came in, and they knew her. Seeing regulars is always a great sign. She also let me try a Moroccan Tagine Meatball, and it was SO good.
Lastly, indoor dining space is limited. This isn’t a problem, but you should temper your expectations—if you hit a crowded moment, you may not find a seat. Just...
Read moreMy bf (soon to be husband!) just moved in with me and we needed a nice break from unpacking. I saw the great reviews for this place today and decided to stop in for some light bites.
Sunshine cafe lived up to the reviews and surpassed it. I like tuna but I’m not the hugest fan there is (and same goes with bread, I know I’m weird), but I finished every bite of the tuna sandwich and the bread (and I’m a person who gets my burgers lettuce wrapped, etc. bc I’m not a huge bread fan). That sandwich was so yummy, I scarfed it down! I also had lentil soup and fresh squeezed apple juice. The portions were very big for the cost and hit the spot on a cold day.
My bf had the ham and cheese on a croissant and said the croissant was so flaky and delicious. I honestly wanted to eat half of his sandwich too it looked so good 🤣
Last thing I want to mention is how sweet Maria is. She really makes you feel at home and you can tell she puts love and care into everything she makes. She’s the kind of person you want to see do well and will go out of your way to support because she is so loving and deserves the world! She will go out of the way to make sure you’re super happy with everything - she’s just awesome!
So glad I found this gem and that it is close to where I live! I will absolutely make this place part of my weekly rotation!
Great job, Maria!!!!!!! We...
Read moreLet me preface by saying that the owner of the shop is a very kind/sweet person in her mannerisms. The store aesthetic is very nice and welcoming. Unfortunately, I take no prisoners so this is a review of her food and NOT the quality of her character. I was recommended this place by my cousin as he lives nearby. I didn't know what to choose but looking at the reviews I saw that the tuna sandwich and smoothie/juice was very popular. I asked her what she recommended and so I got the berry smoothie. The tuna sandwich was subpar. It had a lot of onions and was very expensive at $12 considering the taste of the sandwich. The smoothie was definitely fresh but it didn't have the smoothie texture and was okay in taste. All in all I would say if you like her character and want to support her business go right ahead, but if you came here looking to be blown away, you will be severely disappointed. I wish the owner...
